School Program

Fine Arts
Music is offered to all students utilizing a new piano lab. The Art Masters program provides an excellent curriculum covering master artists and their techniques.

In grades 6-8 fine arts electives are offered each trimester which include, but are nor limited to, Visual Arts (drawing and painting), Theater Art/Acting, Creative Writing, GIS, Music (piano), and Musical Theater/Dance. These electives are held three times a week and students have the option to change each trimester.

Character Counts (Monarch of the Month)
Trustworthiness. Respect. Responsibility. Fairness. Caring. Citizenship.
St. Edward introduced this program to our students in 2004. The Six Pillars of Character are ethical values to guide our choices. The standards of conduct that arise out of those values constitute the ground rules of ethics, and therefore of ethical decision-making.

A pillar is chosen for every month of the school year to be followed by the elementary students and taught by their homeroom teacher. At the monthly school assembly several students from each class are recognized for displaying the character trait of the month. These students are called Monarchs of the Month.

Accelerated Reader
A key element of St. Edward the Confessor School’s reading program is integrated with the computer lab and library using Accelerated Reader (AR), STAR Reading and STAR Early Literacy testing. The Accelerated Reader software program offers reading comprehension goals and is individualized with point and accuracy scores in reading comprehension. Students are recognized frequently by classroom teachers and at the end of the year in an all school assembly for the points achieved in this program. We have matched our library book purchases with the program and have seen more students every year participate and receive affirmation. The STAR reading assessments help to track the grade level equivalent of our readers and are used to communicate with parents in helping their children select appropriate reading for Accelerated Reader and pleasure.

Library
Reading is the key to all of our futures. The school library is open daily 8-4 PM. Grades Pre- Kindergarten through 5th grade have scheduled times during the week. Students in grades 6 – 8 may come in before, during or after school. During their library session students enjoy a story read to them by a parent volunteer. After the story students have time for book selections and checking-out their books. The library is broken down into two sections – a comfortable story section and classroom tables for students to work.

Recently the library had an author/illustrator come to St. Edward Library. He spoke of his early years of drawing pictures, then how he put stories to each picture. He put his dream together by writing and publishing a book.

Every year we have two Book Fairs which help raise money to purchase new books. They are usually in January and June. We will introduce a new Catholic Book Fair in March. Although we have many books, we continually strive to increase our library inventory.

Spanish
The focus of the Spanish program in grades K-2 is the introduction of vocabulary such as numbers, colors and animals. Songs and games are used to teach and reinforce the curriculum.

Middle school Spanish classes continue to develop the skills from earlier grades, adding grammar, reading and writing. A computer program is utilized that is connected to the textbook used.

Auxiliary Studies
Every student is a child of God and is deserving of an opportunity to the best Catholic education possible. Recognizing that a Catholic school should be available to all who desire this educational environment, the Catholic schools in the Diocese of Orange strive to accept everyone for whom an appropriate program can be designed and implemented.

The Auxiliary Studies Program is a cooperative program between the child’s classroom teacher and the Auxiliary teacher in which learning needs can be addressed in a more effective way. The program offers a range of services and support for Intervention and Enrichment. It is anticipated that each student accepted into the Auxiliary Studies Program will utilize the services to the degree necessary for each student’s own learning needs.

As the program requires the commitment of a more intensive level of school resources than those that are offered to other students at St. Edward the Confessor Parish School, a fee over and above the tuition is required for enrollment.

Two Year Kindergarten Experience (TYKE)
What is the TYKE program? The TYKE (Two Year Kindergarten Experience) program is designed for children needing another year between pre-school and kindergarten. The reasons could be for academic, developmental, social growth and/or maturity, or for children with birthdays that fall between September 1st and October 1st.

These students are introduced to a more academic environment along with developmental support.

This transitional year between pre-school and kindergarten is designed to establish a well-rounded child who will be academically and developmentally ready to enter kindergarten.
