Dear Fellow Parishioners,
A glance at these pictures puts our national debate on healthcare into some perspective. Here is Fr. Achilles Mayanja standing in front of the medical clinic that has been recently finished. Your generosity in the past has made this facility possible. Note that it has been named after our parish! But also notice that the building is empty of persons. To have a place to safely birth your child, to receive basic medical attention is Fr. Achilles goal. Now that the facility has been built, it needs to be stocked with medical supplies and equipment as well as a medical technician to care for those who come for help. Your willingness to share your resources will help Fr. Achilles to take another step in helping those in his community. Next weekend Fr. Achilles will appeal to us. I ask you to be open to his words this coming Sunday. Please be as generous as you can and help make this medical facility a true reality.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
For me, anniversaries can be a mixed blessing. Recently, I blessed a couple whose wedding I had witnessed nearly 30 years ago. I was honored that they would search me out and ask me to renew their vows with them. But when they excitedly pulled out their wedding album to show me their wedding pictures, I almost didn't recognize the priest in the photos. Lots more hair, a beard and a lot less of me! Ah, the joys of aging!
As is the custom in small towns in Mexico, the first anniversary of a priest is a reason for a significant celebration. Last week Fr. Mario celebrated his first anniversary of ordination with a special Mass and reception complimented by Aztec dancers, folklorico dancers as well as Mariachi. As I joined him at the altar I could not help but recall my first assignment years ago as a priest with all the enthusiasm, excitement and hopefulness of changing the world. It was a great time to be a priest with the opportunity to try all sorts of new things and the excuse of being a 'newbie' when things didn't turn out the way I thought they would. It is amazing how the years of ministry have tempered me in some ways, but how good it is to be around young priests to catch some of their excitement and energy.
Also, last Sunday, Fr. Chris and I, along with a number of priests from the diocese gathered at St. Nicholas parish in Laguna Hills to celebrate Fr. Tim McCarthy's 50th anniversary as a priest. Now retired with a slight tremor in his hands, Fr. Tim expressed his gratitude for his many years as a priest and was thankful for the many opportunities to serve his God and Church in the parishes he served. I was realizing on Sunday that when I served as a deacon in his parish in Los Alamitos, he was younger as my pastor then than I am now!
Anniversaries are a mixed blessing because they remind me of the seasons of a person's life and how we see and experience the world differently as time goes on. The youthful energy of a young cleric with hopes to make a difference in the world, and a long lovingly look back realizing that whatever good we may have accomplished was the result of the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Do I enjoy anniversaries? Yes, I do for they remind me of where I have been and most likely of where I am going!

Para mí, los aniversarios pueden ser una bendición mixta. Recientemente, le dí mi bendición a una pareja, cuya boda yo había presidido hace casi 30 años. Fue un honor para mi saber que ellos me andaban buscando de nuevo para renovar sus votos matrimoniales. Pero cuando sacaron el álbum de fotos de esa boda, casi no reconozco el sacerdote en las fotos. Era yo, con mucho más pelo, una barba y menos cuerpo! Ah, los placeres de la vejez!
Como es costumbre en algunas ciudades de México, el primer aniversario de un sacerdote es una razón grande para festejar. La semana pasada, el padre Mario celebró su primer aniversario de ordenación sacerdotal con una Misa especial. Después de la Misa, la recepción gozó de danzas folklóricas mexicanas, como las danzas aztecas, y con mariachi. Como yo estuve con él junto al altar no pude evitar recordar mi primera asignación como sacerdote hace algunos años, con todo el entusiasmo, la emoción y deseos de cambiar el mundo. Es sorprendente cómo los años de Ministerio me han templado en alguna forma, pero lo bueno es que alrededor de sacerdotes jóvenes he podido capturar su entusiasmo y energía.
También, el pasado domingo, el padre Chris y yo, junto con otros sacerdotes de la diócesis nos reunimos en la parroquia de San Nicolás en Laguna Hills para celebrar los 50 años de ordenación sacerdotal del Pbro. Tim McCarthy, quien con un leve temblor en sus manos decidió retirarse. El padre Tim expresó su gratitud por los muchos años vividos como sacerdote y agradeció las numerosas oportunidades que tubo para servir a Dios y ala Iglesia. Me acordé de cuando serví como diácono en su parroquia en Los Alamitos, él era más joven de lo que yo soy ahora!
Los aniversarios son una bendición mixta, porque me recuerdan cómo pasa la vida y cómo vemos el mundo de forma diferente conforme pasa el tiempo. La energía de un sacerdote joven con la esperanza de hacer una diferencia en el mundo, y la mirada amorosa hacia atrás dándose cuenta de que cualquier cosa buena que podamos hacer ha sido el resultado del poder del Espíritu Santo.
¿Disfruto los aniversarios? Sí, porque me recuerdan donde he estado y hacia donde voy!

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Phew! Am I glad I stayed this time! Catholic Charities of Orange County sponsors annually a Catholic Woman of the Year luncheon.
Being a typical guy, I start getting ready to leave this type of event after a couple hours. A few years ago I left early and was speeding out of the parking lot as they announced that the St. Edward candidate had won. This year I stayed like a good pastor, and was very happy that I did, as our very own Jo Mothershead was called to the stage to receive this honor. A grace filled moment for us, her family, and for our Catholic community.
Another trace of grace beginning to develop is a ministry for engaged couples preparing for marriage. We are beginning to search for married couples in our parish who would be willing to walk with engaged couples as they look forward to a lifelong commitment. We will be utilizing the following program called Master the Mysteries of Love beginning Saturday, June 26. We need experienced married couples to go through the program first so that they will mentor engaged couples through the process. Dear Fellow Parishioners,
I don't recall which of our priests brought up the idea; probably Fr. Loc, but we discussed the possibility of being face painted with the Avitar motif for the Fiesta weekend. Then we realized that bright blue paint with sparkles would not look good with red vestments for Pentecost! Oh well, perhaps next year!
Pentecost and Fiesta might seem like a conflict, but from a certain perspective they are both celebrations of church and community. The early church had to figure out how to get along with many cultures and languages and it took the prompting of the Spirit to point them in the right direction. The Fiesta in its own way works with the communities of Dana Point, St. Edward the Confessor, and San Felipe de Jesus chapel. We work together for a common cause in building up our parish and school.
Many, many thanks to the Fiesta chairs, the committee, the volunteers and parishioners who supported this past weekend. It takes a lot of planning and coordination to have such a successful experience. In the midst of a lot of hard work, everyone seemed to have fun. Thank you as well for all the parishioners who had to park several blocks away and still found their way to church!
Another upcoming Trace of Grace will be this weekend with the monks of Christ in the Desert Monastery. Check the bulletin for more information for this grace filled time with the power of prayer and chant in the monastic tradition.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Grace approaches us from all directions! In listening to recently arrived parishioners to St. Edwards' at a gathering of new parishioners, I heard from the new folks of their own pastexperiences of parishes doing good things and of a desire to get connected to the live and faith of our parish community here. Hmmm...same Spirit...same Church... just different communities. Perhaps one of the meanings of Pentecost!!!
Grace will be approaching us with the sound of Monastic chant and prayer on Friday evening, June 4 at San Felipe de Jesus in Spanish beginning with confessions and Mass at 7pm. Then on Saturday, June 5, we will welcome the Monks from Christ in the Desert Monastery in New Mexico who will share with us the wisdom of Monastic chant and prayer in English. Our time of reflection will begin after Saturday morning Mass and conclude around 12:30pm. Also, the Monks will be preaching that weekend both at San Felipe and St. Edward's. I spent about 3 weeks at the Monastery while on my sabbatical 5 years ago. I found it to be a place of spiritual energy and peace. Come and taste a part of our great tradition of Monastic practices in our church. Check for the flyer this weekend.
Please know that you are most welcome on Sunday, June 6 from 2 to 4pm for our new Rectory open house. We will be about one mile from the parish church. Please check the bulletin for the address.
Happy Pentecost! A day when we claim who we are as church and acknowledge the many gifts of the Spirit among us...

Queridos Feligreses,
La Gracia se aproxima a nosotros en todas las direcciones! Al escuchar a los nuevos feligreses que recientemente llegaron a nuestra parroquia de San Eduardo, he oído a la gente dar sus propias experiencias, en sus parroquias pasadas haciendo cosas buenas y con un deseo de conectarse a la vida y fe de nuestra comunidad aquí. Hmmm...el mismo Espiritu….la misma Iglesia….solamente diferentes comunidades. Quizás sea uno de los significados de Pentecostés!!!
La Gracia vendra a nosotros con la visita de los Monjes que nos acompañaran el viernes 4 de junio por la tarde en San Felipe de Jesús, sera una tarde de adoracion en forma de canto al Señor sera en español comenzaremos con confesiones y despues la misa sera a las 7 pm. Luego el sábado, 5 de junio, les daremos la bienvenida a los Monjes del monasterio de Cristo en el desierto que nos acompañan desde Nuevo México, y van a compartir con nosotros en canto y oración la palabra, esto sera en inglés. Nuestro tiempo de reflexión empezará después de la Misa de la mañana del sábado y concluye alrededor de las 12:30 pm. También, los Monjes predicaran ese fin de semana, en San Felipe y San Eduardo. Yo estuve aproximadamente 3 semanas en el monasterio mientras estaba en mi sabáticos hace mas de 5 años. Me pareció ser un lugar de mucha energía espiritual y mucha paz. Acompañenos y pruebe una parte de nuestra gran tradición con los Monjes en nuestra iglesia. Mas informacion sobre esto el próximo fin de semana.
Usted sabe que es mas que Bienvenido el domingo, 6 de junio de 2 a 4 pm para que venga a ver nuestra nueva casa. Estaremos muy cerca de la iglesia, como a una milla. Revise el boletín para la dirección. Feliz dia de Pen- tecostés! Un día cuando afirmamos que somos como iglesia y reconocemos los muchos dones del espíritu santo entre nosotros...

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
I could not help but recall Art Linkletter's TV show in the 50's with children, "Kid's say the darndest things". Last Saturday night, a group of First grade Faith Formation students along with their parents, teachers, and myself took a quick tour of the church prior to the 5:30pm Mass. We then went to the cry room and, while Fr. Loc celebrated Mass, I attempted to explain the liturgical actions as well as answer a list of rather profound theological questions, such as, "Who is God's Father?" I think I ended up babbling something rather unprofound in my attempt to answer on a first grade level! But it was great fun and it reminded me that our Church is one of all ages and even in one's own language, we struggle at times trying to communicate the Good News!
As I wrote about last week regarding our new offsite rectory, I mentioned that I would be updating you on our Master Plan (you can check the parish website in case you missed last week) in upcoming bulletins. Our Strategic Planning Committee has been working closely with our architect, Bauer and Wiley as we narrow down options for our Parish Life Center to be located near the church. While these are only 'footprint' levels of design, they have been based on needs assessments which the architect has done with staff and parish ministries. After a meeting with the City of Dana Point to get their input, our next step is to present the conceptual design to the Diocesan Construction Board at the end of May. Taking the Board's input and suggestions, we will make adjustments and then present to them again in June as needed. As we clear these hurdles, then we will begin the process to discuss this concept with our parish at large. I look forward to sharing this process with you. I firmly believe that a Parish Life Center will enhance and strengthen the life of our parish community.

Queridos Feligreses,
No pude evitar recordar un programa de televisión para niños llamado "Art Linkletter" que salió al aire en los años 50: «los niños dicen las cosas más graciosas». El sábado pasado por la noche, un grupo de estudiantes del primer grado del programa 'Formación en la Fe' junto con sus papás, maestros, y yo tuvimos una excursión dentro del templo justo antes de la Misa de las 5:30 pm. Fuimos al cuarto para niños, mientras el Padre Loc celebraba Misa, yo intenté explicar las acciones litúrgicas y dar respuesta a una lista de preguntas teológicas muy profundas, por ejemplo, ¿quién es el papá de Dios? ¡Pienso que terminé tartamudeando y di una respuesta no tan profunda en mi intento de contestar a un nivel de primer grado! Sin embargo, la experiencia fue muy divertida y me recordó que nuestra Iglesia es para todas las edades e incluso en nuestro propio idioma batallamos en ocasiones en comunicar a otros la Buena Nueva.
La semana pasada escribí acerca de nuestra nueva casa cural ubicada a las afueras de nuestro establecimiento parroquial. Mencioné también que los mantendría al tanto acerca de nuestro Plan Maestro (consulte la página web parroquial si no obtuvo el boletín de la semana pasada) y para boletines próximos. Nuestro Comité de Planeamiento Estratégico ha estado trabajando muy de cerca con nuestro arquitecto, Bauer and Wiley, mientras que reducimos el número de opciones para nuestro Centro Pastoral de Vida que será construido cerca del templo. Mientras que éstos sólo son los planos para el diseño, están basados en encuestas que el arquitecto realizó con el personal y ministerios de la parroquia. Después de reunirnos con personas de la ciudad de Dana Point para obtener sus ideas, nuestro siguiente paso es presentar el diseño conceptual a la Mesa de Construcción Diocesana a finales de mayo. Después de escuchar sus sugerencias realizaremos ajustes y nuevamente les presentaremos el plan en junio según sea necesario. Luego de sobrepasar algunos retos, iniciaremos el proceso para dialogar este concepto con nuestra parroquia en general. Espero con entusiasmo poder compartir este proceso con ustedes. Creo firmemente que un Centro Pastoral de Vida mejorará y fortalecerá nuestra comunidad parroquial.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Several months have gone by since I last reported to you that our parish purchased an offsite rectory. Now why did we do this? You may recall from previous bulletin announcements that our Strategic Planning Committee has been working for the past 2 years on a Master Plan for our parish. Part of that process was to hire an architect to assist us in developing a plan which would create a Parish Life Center in the area where the rectory/offices and Knight Hall currently stand. In reviewing various options it became clear that we would have to move the rectory either onsite or offsite. Because of the rectory construction, the building is not a type which can be moved successfully. It became clear that we would have to build a new rectory. Our parish site, as beautiful as the view is, is limited in square footage and keeping the rectory onsite constrains the development of the Parish Life Center. In researching other local parishes, many priests live in offsite rectories. In conversations with them, they found that having some separation between their ministry and home made for a healthy environment. When our own rectory was built, it stood at the end of the property, not in the middle of the daily activities of our busy parish as it is now. In looking at real estate possibilities for several months, we purchased a four-plex about one mile from the parish. Currently, the 40 year old building is in its final phases of being renovated. We plan on moving there in mid June, with a rectory open house for the parish prior to that time. An invitation to the entire parish will be forthcoming soon. We hope you’ll come by and check it out!
Many Catholics believe that their priests have always lived in, on, or near the parish church. While this is true in many cases, priests in most other countries as well as many in our own country live offsite. When the current site for St. Edward’s was being developed in the 1960’s, Fr. Knight lived down the street in a house where Deacon Jesse currently lives. There was never a priest living onsite at San Felipe de Jesus (the original St. Edward’s) but instead lived in an apartment and finally a house in San Juan Capistrano. So our own parish has experienced priests living offsite.
“How will we find Father?” you might be asking. Well, the same way most people currently do. As most of us are discovering, the age of electronic media has overtaken us. With email, cell phones, etc., communication often starts there. In keeping regular office hours, as well as a priest always on duty in case of an emergency, I am confident that our parish will continue to be well served both here and at San Felipe de Jesus. It will take a period of adjustment for both the parish and the priests as we get used to this new living arrangement, but I am sure that we will work out any snags.
Over the next couple of weeks I want to update you on where we are with our overall Master Plan.
Finally, a word of thanks to Neil Sampson, our director of Confirmation as well as the many youth and parent volunteers who have ministered to our young people. The church was packed last Sunday afternoon as Bishop Cirilo Flores administered the sacrament of Confirmation. The Holy Spirit filled our church to the rafters!

Varios meses han pasado desde la última vez en que anuncié la compra, por parte de nuestra parroquia, de una casa cural nueva a las afuera de nuestro establecimiento parroquial. ¿Ahora, porqué hicimos esto? Ustedes podrán recordar a través de los avisos anteriores del boletín que nuestro Comité de Planeamiento Estratégico ha estado trabajando por los dos últimos años en un plan maestro para nuestra parroquia. Parte de ese proceso era contratar a un arquitecto para que nos asistiera en el desarrollo de un plan, el cual crearía un Centro Pastoral de Vida en el área donde están situadas actualmente la casa cural, las oficinas y el salón parroquial. Al considerar las diferentes opciones, se acordó que tendríamos que mover la casa cural, ya sea dentro o fuera de la propiedad parroquial. Debido a la construcción de la casa cural, el edificio no posee un tipo de estructura que facilite moverlo exitosamente. Se acordó entonces que tendríamos que construir una nueva casa cural. El sitio de nuestra parroquia, tan hermoso como lo es la vista, esta limitado por la porción del área cuadrada y al mantener la casa cural dentro, impediría el desarrollo del Centro Pastoral de Vida. Al observar otras parroquias alrededor percibimos que muchos de los sacerdotes viven en casas cúrales fuera de la parroquia. En conversaciones con dichos sacerdotes, ellos descubrieron que el hecho de tener algo de separación entre su ministerio y su hogar hace posible un ambiente más sano. Cuando nuestra casa cural fue construida, se hallaba situada al final de la propiedad, no en medio de las actividades cotidianas de nuestra atareada parroquia, como lo es ahora. Mirando a las posibilidades de las propiedades inmobiliarias por varios meses, compramos un complejo residencial de 4 unidades a una milla de distancia de la parroquia. Actualmente, el edificio de 40 años está en sus etapas finales de renovación. Planeamos mudarnos allí a mediados de junio. La apertura de la nueva casa cural será antes de dicho tiempo. Una invitación a la parroquia entera será enviada con anticipación. ¡Esperamos que usted venga y vea!
Muchos católicos creen que sus sacerdotes siempre han vivido allí cerca del edificio de la iglesia. Lo cual es verdad en muchos casos, sin embargo muchos sacerdotes en la mayoría de los paséis, al igual como en el nuestro, ellos viven fuera de las instalaciones de la parroquia. Cuando se desarrollaba el sitio actual para San Eduardo en los años 60, el Padre Knight vivió bajando la calle en una casa donde el diácono Jesse vive actualmente. Nunca hubo un sacerdote que viviera en las instalaciones de San Felipe de Jesús (originalmente San Eduardo) sino que por el contrario ellos vivieron en un apartamento y finalmente en una casa en San Juan Capistrano. Por consiguiente, nuestra parroquia ya ha experimentado sacerdotes viviendo fuera de las instalaciones de la iglesia.
“Cómo encontramos al padre?” ustedes se preguntarán. Bueno, de la misma manera que lo hace la mayoría de la gente actualmente. Como la mayoría de nosotros lo estamos experimentando, la edad de medios electrónicos nos ha alcanzado. Con los correos electrónicos, los teléfonos celulares, etc., la comunicación comienza a menudo allí. Manteniendo los horarios de oficina establecidos, así como un sacerdote siempre disponible en caso de una emergencia, me siento confiado de que nuestra parroquia continuará siendo muy bien servida, aquí y en San Felipe de Jesús. Demorará un período el ajuste para la parroquia y los sacerdotes mientras nos acostumbramos a este nuevo ajuste de vida, pero estoy seguro que resolveremos cualquier inconveniente.
Durante las siguientes semanas deseo mantenerlos informados acerca de todo lo que sucede con nuestro Plan Maestro.
Finalmente, una palabra de agradecimiento a Neil Sampson, nuestro director del Programa de Confirmación así como a muchos jóvenes y padres voluntarios que han servido a nuestros jóvenes. La iglesia estuvo llena de gente los últimos dos domingos en la tarde mientras que el Obispo Tod D. Brown (18 de abril) y el Obispo Cirilo Flores (25 de abril) administraron el Sacramento de la Confirmación. ¡El Espíritu Santo llenó nuestra iglesia hasta el techo!

Reflection on the IV Sunday of Easter
Listening to the voice of Jesus and being recognized by him. This is where our reflection will begin. The relationship between Jesus and his disciples is perennially linked to listening and recognition. It is the proper way relationships are built among those who love each other; they listen and recognize one another.
We can say, then, that the relationship between Jesus and his disciples was based on love. A personal love, a love that comes from the Father. The attachment to Jesus, whose voice we hear, is a characteristic among his disciples. To be a disciple is to be united with Jesus, neither alone, nor only in principle, instead it is an imitation of his lifestyle. To know and love Jesus Christ is to follow him and announce him as the Good News that brings the world happiness.
This question makes us think of the importance of what we do so that at Mass we can all listen to the Word of Jesus well. Being able to project, and working with the lectors so they can develop their skills (preparing the readings, knowing how to touch the microphone without noise, knowing how to best stand behind the microphone…etc.). It also reminds us that the homily is a very important reflection on the Word of God. And offering a space to read tranquilly and profoundly the Gospels, in a group or individually.
If we listen to Jesus we are listening to someone who with a deep conviction. In people themselves, is where Jesus and the Father see the work of creation. That is why they are committed to us until the end. Similarly, for us every pastoral or personal action should be a result of having listened to Jesus. And believing, with him, that any person is worth more than all the money in the world, regardless of how poor they may be.

Sobre el IV Domingo De Pascua
Escuchar la voz de Jesús y ser reconocido por él. He ahí cómo empieza este texto de hoy. La relación entre Jesús y sus discípulos pasa por la escucha y el reconocimiento. Es la manera propia de relacionarse de aquellos que se aman: se escuchan y se reconocen.
Podemos decir, pues, que la relación de Jesús con los discípulos está basada en el amor. Un amor personal. Un amor que viene del Padre. La adhesión a Jesús, cuya voz escuchamos, es la característica de los discípulos. Ser discípulo es estar unido a Jesús, no sólo, ni principalmente, imitar su estilo de vida. Conocer y amar a Jesucristo para seguirlo y anunciarlo como buena nueva que da la felicidad.
Esta cuestión nos hace pensar en la importancia que tiene todo esfuerzo que hagamos para que en la Misa todos puedan escuchar bien la voz de Jesús. Disponer de una buena megafonía, trabajar con los lectores para que vayan mejorando (preparar las lecturas, saber tocar el micrófono sin hacer ruido, saber ponerse ante el mismo... etcétera). También nos hace pensar en que es muy importante el comentario homilético que se hace de la Palabra de Dios. Y, aún, ofrecer espacios para hacer lectura tranquila y profunda del Evangelio, en grupo o personalmente.
Si escuchamos a Jesús estamos escuchando a alguien que tiene una convicción muy profunda. En las personas, Jesús y el Padre ven la obra de la Creación. Por esto se comprometen hasta el final. De igual manera, para todos nosotros toda acción pastoral y personal tiene que partir de haber escuchado a Jesús. Y de creer, con él, que cualquier persona vale más que todo el dinero del mundo, por pobre que sea.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
We have now finished the Octave of Easter with Divine Mercy Sunday. It is our Church’s way of suggesting that Easter is more than just a Sunday, rather it is a moment of grace that extends through time.
Just as the Easter moment is celebrated liturgically for an entire week, the preparation for Easter, in fact, all of Holy Week extends for some time as well. That is why I would like to thank the many traces of grace which provide our parish community of St. Edward and San Felipe de Jesus with beautiful environments as well as a sense of the sacred in these busy days. Traces of Graces are our parish liturgy committee, the environment committees, music, the priests and the deacons as well as all of the various ministries who commit extra time to add life to our liturgies in this Sacred Season. Some of the ministries are the ushers, lectors, acolytes, cantors, choirs, sound technicians, maintenance and parish staff, teachers and administrators at our school who prepare our students, our Faith Formation staff who prepare students and candidates to enter our community and receive the sacraments. It is a sign that the Spirit is alive and calling us forward in this season of the Risen Lord!

Hemos terminado con la semana ‘Octava de Pascua’ que concluyo con el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. La semana ‘Octava de Pascua’ es la manera en que la Iglesia da entender que Pascua es más que un solo domingo, de hecho es un momento de gracia que se extiende a través del tiempo.
De la misma manera en que celebramos Pascua litúrgicamente por una semana, la preparación para Pascua, de hecho, se extiende a la Semana Santa. Por esta razón deseo agradecer los múltiples rasgos de gracia que proveen a la comunidad parroquial de San Eduardo el Confesor y San Felipe de Jesús con bellas decoraciones y el sentido de lo sagrado durante estos días tan ocupados. Los rasgos de gracia son nuestro comité parroquial de liturgia, comité de decoración, música, los sacerdotes, diáconos y todos los diferentes comités que contribuyen con su tiempo a nuestras liturgias en este Tiempo Sagrado. Algunos de los ministerios son: ministros de hospitalidad, lectores, servidores del altar, cantores, coros, técnicos del sonido, personal de mantenimiento y parroquial, maestros y administradores de nuestra escuela que preparan a nuestros estudiantes, nuestro personal de la Oficina de Formación en la Fe que preparan a estudiantes y candidatos a entrar a nuestra comunidad y recibir los sacramentos. ¡Es una señal que el Espíritu Santo está vivo y nos está llamando al frente durante esta temporada de nuestro Señor Resucitado!

Only God Knows
Why am I still here? Only god knows. Some of you may remember that about two years ago when my wife was dying of cancer I announced the bad and the good news, the bad news being that my wife’s cancer was terminal and the good news being that I may not have to miss her for a long time because I had been diagnosed with lung cancer myself. On the advice of my doctor and insistence from relatives I submitted to chemo therapy treatment. After six months of treatment I had a second set of tests and showed no change on the tumors. My oncologist said that I should continue the treatment for another six months, then take another set of tests. Even though the side effects were terrible I agreed. After the second six month period I had my third set of tests and the result was that the spots in my lungs were increasing in size and in numbers. I thought about it, the treatment is not working and the side effects are killing me, why should I extend the agony? I stopped taking the chemo tablets and at the same time I stopped all other medication that my primary doctor had me on for years, such as for high blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid, and GERD chronic heartburns). After two months, when I began to recover from the side effects I went and told my oncologist what I had done, he respected my decision. Then I went to see my primary doctor, not telling him what I had done he ordered blood work, and two days later I went to see the results. To my surprise everything was normal. I told him what I did; now he was surprised.
“How are you doing?” people ask me. “Much better than I deserve”, I answer. How do I feel? Well, other than old age creeping up on me, I feel great. How is my cancer? I don’t know, and frankly, I don’t care. Why am I still around? Only God knows.

SOLAMENTE DIOS SABE
¿Por qué aun estoy aquí? Solamente Dios sabe. Algunos de ustedes podrán recordar que hace aproximadamente dos años, cuando mi esposa moría de cáncer, anuncié una mala y una buena noticia. La mala era que el cáncer de mi esposa era terminal y la buena era que yo no la extrañaría por mucho tiempo puesto que yo había sido diagnosticado con cáncer de pulmón. Siguiendo los consejos de mi doctor y la insistencia de mis familiares me sometí al tratamiento de quimioterapia. Después de seis meses de tratamiento tuve una segunda serie de exámenes médicos los cuales mostraron no mejorías en los tumores. Mi oncólogo dijo que debo continuar el tratamiento por otros seis meses y después tomar otra serie de exámenes médicos. A pesar que los efectos secundarios eran terribles yo estuve de acuerdo. Después del segundo periodo de seis meses tuve una tercera serie de exámenes médicos y los resultados mostraron que los tumores en mis pulmones seguían creciendo en tamaño y en número. Pensé, el tratamiento no esta funcionando y los efectos secundarios me están aniquilando, ¿por qué prolongar la agonía? Dejé de tomar los medicamentos de la quimioterapia y, al mismo tiempo dejé de tomar otros medicamentos que me habían sido recetados tiempo atrás por mi doctor tales como para la tensión arterial alta, el colesterol, la tiroides, y el GERD (acidez estomacal crónica). Después de dos meses, cuando comencé a recuperarme de los efectos secundarios le comente a mi oncólogo lo que había hecho, él respetó mi decisión. Después de esto, fui a ver a mi medico personal, sin mencionarle lo que había hecho. Él me pidió unos exámenes de sangre y después de dos días fui a ver los resultados. Para mi sorpresa todo esta bien. Le comenté a mi doctor lo que hice, ahora él es él sorprendido. ¿Cómo estas?, la gente me pregunta, yo les respondo: “mejor de lo que me merezco”.
¿Cómo te sientes? Bien, a pesar de mi edad avanzada que me arrastra, me siento enormemente bien. ¿Cómo está mi cáncer? No lo sé, y francamente, no me interesa. ¿Por qué todavía estoy por aquí? Solamente Dios sabe.

As this weekly refrain died out in church, as it has during our Lenten Friday Stations of the Cross, on this particular Friday, little hands started reaching up grabbing at a portable microphone. Bigger hands held firmly onto the mike and then when it was the right moment, preschoolers recited the Lord’s Prayer. Other children read some of the reflections, sometimes on cue and sometimes in spite of cues. Sometimes just the sight of a microphone frightened some of the children and for others it was the signal to say the prayers as loud as they possibly could! The rest of us prayed (and smiled) along with them as our preschoolers and their parents each took a station leading us through the final walk of Jesus to the cross.
This Friday evening scene reminds me that as we walk with Jesus in this most holy of weeks, we enter into this time bringing with us all the certainty of our faith, the trepidations of our hearts, our fears and our hesitations, our strengths and our trusts. May you bring what you need and what you have to offer of your life to the Lord as we enter the time of reflection of the Paschal Mystery of Christ. You may feel a bit like one of the preschoolers, you may feel like a parent, or you feel like that evening’s crowd. But like our efforts on that Friday evening, we help each other to have our words and actions point to Christ and his walk with each of us.

Queridos Feligreses,
“Te adoramos y te bendecimos o Cristo”
“Que por tu cruz redimiste al mundo”
Hemos estado repitiendo esto cada semana en el Vía Crucis durante los viernes de Cuaresma, este viernes en particular, pequeñas manos empezaron a querer sostener el micrófono. Después manos más grandes sostenían firmemente el micrófono y cuando era el momento adecuado, los estudiantes del grado preescolar recitaron la oración del Señor. Otros niños leyeron algunas reflexiones, a veces entonados y a veces fuera de tono. Pues a veces, con sólo ver un micrófono algunos niños les entra el pánico, y para otros fue la oportunidad perfecta para recitar las oraciones a todo pulmón! El resto de nosotros rezábamos (y sonreíamos), junto con nuestros niños de preescolar y sus padres, cada uno tomó una estación y así logramos llegar al final del Vía Crucis.
Esta escena de la noche del viernes me recuerda que mientras caminamos con Jesús en la Semana Santa, entramos a este tiempo trayendo con nosotros toda la seguridad de nuestra fe, la turbulencia de nuestros corazones, nuestros temores y nuestras dudas, nuestra fortaleza y confianza. Para que ustedes puedan presentar lo que necesitan y lo que tienen en su vida al Señor al entrar en reflexión con el misterio pascual de Cristo. Usted puede sentirse como uno de esos niños de preescolar, usted puede sentirse como un padre, o usted ya se siente como la multitud esa noche. Valió la pena nuestro esfuerzo de esa noche, porque así nos ayudamos unos a otros para que nuestra palabra y acciones apunten a una sola dirección y esa es Cristo y que su caminar sea con cada uno de nosotros.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Our Lenten season can get lost in the midst of many other seasons, winter ski weeks, March madness or even our local Whale Festival! A good grounding point for us is to remember those who are preparing for the Easter Sacraments through our RCIA and RCIC processes at San Felipe Chapel and St. Edward’s. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults/Children). While those of us who worship at our 9am Sunday Mass have seen for many months our dismissal of our catechumens and candidates, the rest of us may not be aware of this part of our community preparation. After they were formally received by Bishop Tod last month at St. Columban’s in Garden Grove, they are now experiencing a prayer process called the Scrutinies in which we pray that they may be purified in the Spirit and truly ready to receive Christ and his Church at Easter.
Last week, they reflected on the Paschal Mystery of Christ during a daylong retreat in Knight Hall. Witness talks, sunny weather, and time for personal reflection were all part of the day ending in one of the Scrutinies at the evening Mass.
Why mention all of this to you? Well, it is good for you to know so that you can continue to pray for them in this Lenten season. But just as important, it is good for the rest of us to remember that we are continually being converted to Christ and his Church. It is a lifelong task and it is their witness to us that helps shape us in the Lenten preparation time.

Nuestra temporada cuaresmal a veces se pierde entre otras temporadas, semanas de invierno, Locura de Marzo o nuestro Festival de Ballenas Local. Un punto fundamental para nosotros es recordar aquellos que se están preparando para sus Sacramentos esta Pascua por medio de RICA y RCIC en la Capilla de San Felipe y San Eduardo. (Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos/Niños). Mientras todos nosotros que celebramos la Misa Dominical a las 9 am hemos visto a nuestros catecúmenos y candidatos por varios meses, el resto de la comunidad quizás no se ha dado cuenta de esta parte de nuestra preparación comunitaria. Después de que formalmente fueron recibidos por el obispo Tod el mes pasado en San Columbano en Garden Grove, ellos ahora experimentan un proceso llamados los Escudriños in cuales nosotros oramos que sean purificados y verdaderamente preparados en el Espíritu para recibir a Cristo y a su Iglesia durante la Pascua.
La semana pasada, ellos reflejaron sobre el Misterio Pascual de Cristo durante un retiro en Knight Hall. Caminares testimoniales, clima soleado, y tiempo para reflejar fueron parte del día que termino con uno de los Escutriños en la Misa.
¿Porque les menciono todo esto? Pues, es bueno que tu continúes a rezar por ellos esta temporada Cuaresmal. Porque simplemente es importante, es bueno que el resto de la parroquia recuerde que continuamente somos convertidos a Cristo y a su Iglesia. Es un proceso que dura toda la vida y es su testimonio que nos ayuda a formarnos en este tiempo Cuaresmal.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Oh no! My toes are tapping and I am beginning to sway like a palm tree to Jamaican music...well, ok, like a big palm tree! Fr. Richard Ho Lung, MOP (Missionaries of the Poor) along with two of his music ministers is returning this coming weekend for our liturgies at St. Edward the Confessor. As many of you know, Fr. Richard founded the Missionaries of the Poor as a spiritual response to the crushing poverty surrounding him in Jamaica. From there the Holy Spirit led him send brothers and priests to other places of poverty in Uganda, Haiti, India as well as the Philippines where they are currently active in living the Gospel commission to be servants to those most in need.
Several members of our parish community have worked in Haiti alongside the brothers. As challenging as the ministry is, especially to those of us who live in a first world society, it becomes a retreat experience because the work is so infested with faith. I had the privilege a few years ago to be with Al and Linda Scaduto of our parish as we worked together with the Brothers taking care of abandoned children, disabled elderly and AIDS patients. Some of us are looking at returning there again this summer.
This time, Fr. Richard will join us for several days. On Friday morning, March 19 he will celebrate the Mass with our parish school children. On Friday evening as well as Saturday, he will lead us in a Lenten retreat. It will begin Friday evening after Mass and continue on Saturday from 9am to 3pm. (Lunch included!) You are most welcome to attend! Please check the bulletin flyer for more information. Lent is all about conversion to become closer to the heart of Jesus and I trust that this retreat experience from Fr. Ho Lung’s rich reflections, music and meditations will do just that.
Fr. Richard will also be preaching at all the Masses on the weekend as well. While he is preaching for the sake of the missions (remember almsgiving is a part of the Lenten missive), his lively preaching along with the Jamaican musicians and singers will add some hopeful energy on Laetare Sunday which is customarily seen as a Lenten 'break'. Your generosity is most appreciated!

Queridos Feligreses,
¡Oh no! ¡Mis dedos de los pies están golpeando ligeramente como queriendo bailar y estoy empezando a sacudirme como una palmera al ritmo de música de Jamaica….bueno, está bien, como una palmera muy grande! El Padre Richard Ho Lung, MDP (Misioneros de los Pobres) junto con dos de sus ministros de música regresan este próximo fin de semana para estar presentes durante nuestras liturgias de San Eduardo el Confesor. Muchos de ustedes saben que el Padre Richard fundó la congregación de los Misioneros de los Pobres como una respuesta espiritual a la gran pobreza que le rodeaba en Jamaica. Desde allí el Espíritu Santo lo inspiró a enviar otros hermanos y sacerdotes a otros lugares de pobreza como Uganda, Haití, India, y además las Filipinas donde están actualmente activos en la comisión de vivir el Evangelio como siervos de los más necesitados.
Varios miembros de nuestra comunidad parroquial han trabajado en Haití junto a estos hermanos. A pesar de lo difícil que es este ministerio, especialmente para nosotros que vivimos en una sociedad de primer mundo con tantas comodidades, se puede convertir en una experiencia de retiro espiritual, pues el trabajo está tan penetrado de la fe. Hace algunos años a tras tuve el privilegio de trabajar con Al y Linda Scaduto, miembros de nuestra parroquia, y trabajamos juntos en el cuidado de niños abandonados, discapacitados, ancianos y pacientes con SIDA. Algunos de nosotros estamos planeando regresar de nuevo durante este próximo verano.
Esta vez, el padre Richard se quedará con nosotros por varios días. En la mañana del viernes, 19 de marzo él va a celebrar la Eucaristía con los estudiantes de la escuela de San Eduardo el Confesor. El viernes por la noche, y el sábado, él conducirá el Retiro Cuaresmal. Este retiro iniciará el viernes por la noche después de la Misa vespertina y continuará el sábado desde las 9 de la mañana hasta las 3 de la tarde, (incluye comida). Todos están cordialmente invitados. Por favor, lea el boletín para obtener más información. La cuaresma es el tiempo para acercarnos más al corazón de Jesús, y confío en que la experiencia del retiro con las reflexiones, música y meditaciones del Padre Ho Lung nos ayudará en eso.
El Padre Richard también predicará en todas las Misas del fin de semana. Dear Fellow Parishioners,
As we begin our third week in our Lenten season, I pass onto you some thoughts and information:
“I am thankful for the life I have been given and I am ready to face this next chapter of my life”. Those were the closing words of a long conversation I had with Fr. Ed Cooley a couple of weeks ago at a rest care facility. The next day he was being taken to Nazareth House in Los Angeles where a number of retired priests reside. Fr. Ed, a retired pastor of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and living in Laguna Niguel, graciously assisted us over the past several years is now in his mid 80’s. Recently, his health has taken a turn for the worse and he decided that he needed to be closer to his doctors. Please keep him in your thoughts and your prayers. We will miss his Irish gracefulness.
Again, I am most thankful for those members of our parish who gathered for the Assembly in early February. Our new Pastoral Council is working on our Parish Mission Statement and will be processing the tremendous amounts of insights and input from the Assembly over the months ahead. It will be a lot of work but also a great opportunity to help focus the pastoral life of our parish community. There is always more to do and to become as part of the Kingdom of God.
We are continuing to develop conceptual plans for our Parish Pastoral Center or as is the new term these days, Parish Life Center (I actually prefer this term because it sounds more encompassing). We continue our work with our architect, Bauer and Wiley in developing a pre design concept. In conjunction with our Strategic Planning Committee we are making good progress. Hopefully, we will have something to show you pretty soon!

Queridos Feligreses,
Como ya empezamos la tercera semana cuaresmal, les paso algunos pensamientos e información:
"Estoy agradecido por la vida que tengo y estoy listo para hacer frente a este próximo capítulo de mi vida". Estas fueron las palabras del padre Ed Cooley después de una larga conversación que tuve con él hace un par de semanas en un centro de atención para ancianos. Al día siguiente fue llevado a la casa de Nazaret en los Ángeles, donde reside un número de ex sacerdotes. El padre Ed, es un ex pastor de la Arquidiócesis de los Ángeles y vivía en la Laguna de Niguel, nos asistía gentilmente durante los últimos años ahora se va para estar cerca de los médicos pues ya tiene más de 80 años. Recientemente, su salud ha dado un giro para mal, y decidió que necesitaba estar más cerca de sus doctores. Por favor, manténgalo en sus pensamientos y oraciones. Echaremos de menos su gracia irlandesa.
Una vez más, estoy muy agradecido con los miembros de nuestra parroquia que se reunieron en la Asamblea a principios de febrero. Nuestro nuevo Consejo Pastoral está trabajando en nuestra Misión de la Parroquia darán un gran cantidad de ideas durante los próximos meses. Sera mucho trabajo, pero también será una gran oportunidad para ayudar a centrar la vida pastoral de nuestra comunidad de la parroquia. Siempre hay más para hacer y para ser parte del Reino de Dios.
Seguimos desarrollando planes para nuestro centro pastoral parroquial o, como es el nuevo término de estos días, El centro de vida Parroquial (prefiero realmente este término porque suena mejor). Continuamos nuestro trabajo con el arquitecto, Bauer y Wiley en el desarrollo de un concepto de pre diseño. Junto con nuestra Comisión de planificación estratégica estamos haciendo muy buen progreso. Es de esperar que vamos a tener algo para mostrar muy pronto!

Queridos Feligreses,
Caras familiares! Vi al Padre Avelino la semana pasada cuando fui a celebrar un funeral a La Purísima en la ciudad de Orange cuando él fue reasignado el año pasado como vicario parroquial. Él todavía sigue muy sonriente presumiendo sus dientes blancos! La cara del padre Joe al igual, no menos sonriente cuando nos topamos en la elección de candidatos y catecúmenos en Santo Columbino en Garden Grove. Fue una gran experiencia para nuestros elegidos de San Eduardo y San Felipe de Jesús al presenciar cómo un gran número de personas deseaban entrar a la iglesia de Orange en la Semana Santa.
Nuestro grupo de estudiantes de confirmación se libró del aguacero este fin de semana en el campamento de la Ortega. La condición en el campamento es rústica, pero el Espíritu Santo trabajo horas extra por un poco de lluvia, el lodo y el frio fueron fáciles de superar. El grupo de maestros de confirmación es digno de elogio por el esfuerzo que hicieron al mantener la energía de 85 estudiantes de San Eduardo y San Felipe de Jesús. No dudo que ya estaban agotados para el lunes! Ya está próximo el segundo retiro de confirmación a principios de marzo mantengan en sus pensamientos y oraciones a todos nuestros estudiantes que van a asistir.
El Restaurante Ricardo’s en San Juan Capistrano estuvo de fiesta este domingo pasado, por la tarde estuvimos acompañando a los jóvenes del mariachi pues estaban recaudando fondos para viajar a Arizona y competir con otros mariachis. ¿Se pueden imaginar la energía que deben producir juntar a varios Mariachis en un solo lugar? Debe estremecerse el techo! Los estudiantes del mariachi ese domingo eran espectaculares y todos realmente disfrutaron de la música. Incluso algunos de nosotros llegamos a cantar junto con ellos. Estábamos contentos de que nadie tuvo que esconderse debajo de la mesa, por el contrario cantamos todos juntos. Si usted tiene un tiempo libre este domingo por la tarde entre las 2 y 5pm estarán allí dando su última presentación.
Por último, quiero dar las gracias a todos los que han participado en nuestra Asamblea Parroquial. Hace algunas semanas cerca de 125 feligreses se reunieron para discutir y dar su punto de vista en los puntos fuertes y los desafíos que hay en nuestra comunidad como parroquia. Los puntos fueron muchos y variados. Ahora es la tarea del Consejo Pastoral trabajar con esta información requerida y articular al menos tres metas para el futuro de esta parroquia. Gracias especialmente a los miembros del Consejo Pastoral que ayudaron a facilitar el proceso de esa noche. No es tarea fácil mantener el proceso en enfoque. Más sobre esto en lo que se desarrolla!

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Lent is fast approaching! Next Wednesday, folks at work, at the gym, at school, and in the market will be wondering if they should tell you that you missed with your mascara or that you bumped your head while cleaning out the fireplace. Smudge Wednesday might be a term we could use along with Ash Wednesday! We mark this time not merely with ashes but give ourselves a time to reflect a bit more deeply on the meaning of our lives and what keeps us from being liberated in Christ.
Last Monday, about 125 parishioners gathered in Knight Hall to discuss the faith life of our parish. What are the strengths of our parish community and what are the challenges we face together to grow more deeply in Christ? Sr. Regina Fox, our facilitator led the evening along with the formative Pastoral Council to listen to the parishioners discuss that which was meaningful to their faith lives and how they would like the faith life of our parish enhanced in the next three years. The Pastoral Council will now take the information they received and develop three significant goals for our parish. I am really looking forward to see where the Spirit might lead us. Since I was not at the entire meeting so that persons would feel more comfortable speaking, I did not get an opportunity to see all of the information gathered. But I imagine that three important areas of growth for our parish will be greater outreach to those in need, the next generation of the Church, and worship. This is my guess, but we shall see how it all shakes out. A special thanks to our parishioners who gave of their time and energy to be present and participate in the process as well as those who are part of the Pastoral Council. It is a sign to me of the Spirit energizing St. Edward’s and San Felipe de Jesus.
Lenten times also surfaces feelings, memories and painful losses. If you are widowed, separated, or divorced, you may wish to look at an upcoming retreat called “Beginning Experience”. It will be held at the Marywood Retreat Center in Orange on the weekend of February 26-28. For more information, refer to the Beginning Experience brochure. Those who have experienced this retreat claim that it was a healing and enriching experience.

La Cuaresma se está acercando! Ya es el próximo miércoles, la gente en el trabajo, en el gimnasio, en la escuela y en la tienda se preguntan; ¿Cómo es que el tiempo ha pasado tan rápido? Hace algunos meses estábamos limpiando la chimenea. El miércoles de ceniza no solo es un tiempo para marcarnos la cruz en nuestra frente, si no que es el tiempo que podríamos utilizar para reflexionar más profundamente sobre el significado de nuestras vidas y lo que nos impide acercarnos a Cristo.
El lunes pasado, cerca de 125 feligreses se reunieron en Knight Hall para discutir la vida y fe de nuestra parroquia. Los puntos fuertes de nuestra comunidad como parroquia y cuáles son los desafíos que enfrentamos juntos para crecer más profundamente en Cristo? La Sr. Regina Fox, llevó tomo la palabra esa noche junto con el Consejo Pastoral, escuchando a los parroquianos discutir sobre el significado de su fe y cómo les gustaría mejorar la vida de nuestra parroquia en los próximos tres años. El Consejo Pastoral tomo la información recibida y desarrollaron tres metas importantes para nuestra parroquia. Realmente espero ver donde podría llevarnos el espíritu de nuestra fe. Puesto que yo no estuve en toda la reunión, para que las demás personas se sintieran cómodas hablando, no me dieron la oportunidad de ver toda la información recopilada. Pero me imagino que tres importantes áreas de necesidad, tendrán un mayor alcance a los más necesitados para las próximas generaciones de la Iglesia. Esta es solo mi suposición, pero vamos a ver cómo sale todo. Un especial agradecimiento a nuestros feligreses que han dado su tiempo y energía para estar presentes y participar en este proceso, así como aquellos que forman parte del Consejo Pastoral. Es una acción de fe espiritual de las parroquias San Eduardo y San Felipe de Jesús.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
One of the great things of being able to be here as a priest is the opportunity to experience many various encounters of the Holy Spirit. Last Friday evening, a group of faithful parishioners gathered to remember in prayer their beloved priest friend on the 5th anniversary of him being released from this life. Msgr. John Coffield, or ‘Juanote’ as he was affectionately named, spent his later years as administrator at San Felipe de Jesus. Grace emanated from his soul and he was deeply loved by so many from the English speaking community as well as the Spanish speaking community. We gathered in prayer and in song to give thanks to God for his life among us. Deacon Jesse Michel, who worked with Juanote at San Felipe for many years, preached the homily and after Mass we gathered to celebrate his life with music and of course, food!
Last weekend, 39 men from our parish made a weekend retreat at Mater Dolorosa in Sierra Madre. I was able to join them for a few hours Saturday evening. It was a joy for me to see men deeply touched by the love of God and to hear their witness of grace working in their lives. This is an excerpt from Greg Wise’s journal he was willing to share with us:
“As this day winds down, fading into orange and purple as the sun makes its rounds; as I chomp on the peanut M&Ms that had been squirreled away for me in my luggage by Mary Kay, a partner who blesses me more deeply every day; as the turbulence of my life away from retreat ebbs into a smoother sea where the white caps have become gentle swells and a silken sea is hoped for; as the silence takes hold and does its healing work in the hands of my creator who made me, sustains me and loves me in my defiance and selfishness; as all this day with its gentle messages of forgiveness, acceptance, love and abandonment to Gods’ will draws down into sublime shadow lit by the lamp of quiet fellowship and a shared understanding that we are all flawed; men with histories we may not be proud of; men who deceive ourselves a thousand different ways; men, who being men, realize, sometimes frightfully, that we are broken and in need of a savior; that Christ crucified is a victory banner, a complete surrender and eternal sign of a covenant love deeper than space, unfathomable and beyond human understanding. I look down upon the scars of this life and rather than wanting to hide this embarrassing brokenness, I yearn to bind it to the wounds of Christ: Hands to Hands, Feet to Feet, Side to Side; until our foreheads touch and we gaze in love at each other, a love without want, without death, without reservation. My wounds are healed and made blessing within His wounds. My darkness is dispelled in His light. My suffering is transformed and when I become one with He Who Is, I become one with all.”
I am looking forward to our parish Assembly this coming Monday evening. From names given to me by the Pastoral Council as well as names solicited from staff and heads of parish ministries invitations were sent out. Our goal that evening is to uncover Pastoral needs we can focus on for the next three years. I believe that the Spirit will work through this process to keep us moving forward in faith as a parish community.

Queridos Feligreses,
Una de las grandes satisfacciones de poder estar aquí como sacerdote es tener oportunidad de experimentar muchos encuentros con el Espíritu Santo. El pasado viernes por la noche, un grupo de feligreses se reunieron en oración para recordar, el quinto aniversario de la muerte, del sacerdote Monseñor John Coffield, o 'Juanote' como cariñosamente le llamaban, pasó sus últimos años a cargo de la capilla de San Felipe de Jesús. La gracia emanada de su alma y él fue profundamente querido por la comunidad de habla inglesa, así como de la comunidad hispana. Nos reunimos en oración y canto para dar gracias a Dios por su vida entre nosotros. Diácono Jesse Michel, quien trabajó con Juanote en San Felipe durante muchos años, predicó la homilía y después de la misa se reunieron para celebrar su vida con música y por supuesto, con comida!
El pasado fin de semana, 39 hombres de nuestra parroquia se reunieron en un retiro en Mater Dolorosa en Sierra Madre. Yo pude reunirme con ellos unas pocas horas el sábado por la noche. Fue una alegría muy grande para mí ver a hombres profundamente tocados por el amor de Dios y escuchar su testimonio de gracia trabajando en sus vidas. Este es un testimonio del diario de Greg Wise que estuvo dispuesto a compartir con nosotros:
“Contemplando el atardecer, el sol se mete cambiando el cielo de color naranja y púrpura; y comiéndome unos M&MS, que Mary Kay una compañera había puesto en mi equipaje, y quien me bendice profundamente cada día; vi como la turbulencia de mi vida se retiro en un mar suave y profundo; y como el silencio me envuelve, y cura mis heridas, como si fuesen las manos de mi creador quien me sostiene y me ama a pesar de mis debilidades y egoísmo; todos estos días con sus palabras suaves de perdón, aceptación, amor y el abandono de dioses falsos como una sombra sublime iluminada como una luz en la obscuridad entendí que todos tenemos defectos; que somos hombres con historias de las cuales no nos sentimos orgullosos; hombres que engañan de diferentes maneras, hombres que siendo hombres nos damos cuenta y nos da miedo, reconocer que estamos derrotados y necesitamos de un Salvador; que Cristo crucificado es la bandera de la Victoria, un amor más infinito que el universo insaciable que va más allá de la comprensión humana. Mirando las cicatrices de esta vida, en lugar de que sean algo vergonzoso y triste, las uno a las heridas de Cristo: mano a mano, pie con pie, lado a lado; hasta que nuestras frentes toquen y nuestra mirada sea una en el amor de Dios, un amor sin miseria, sin muerte, sin reservas. Espero con ansias nuestra próxima asamblea este lunes por la noche. Algunos nombres me fueron dados por el Consejo Pastoral, así como nombres que fueron elegidos por el personal y jefes de ministerios de la parroquia. Nuestro objetivo esa tarde será descubrir necesidades en la parroquia y concentrarnos en estas en los próximos tres años. Creo que el espíritu funcionará a través de nosotros en este proceso para mantenernos en la fe como parroquia.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
It always amazes me how people respond when they see others suffer, even when they are strangers. Our instincts are good, even though we can often be wary, wondering if the need is authentic, or will the assistance given be used for the greater good. People in our own communities continue to feed and shelter those in need in our own towns. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society, our Parish Christian Service Office, IHOPE, Welcome Inn and other groups in our parish regularly assist those who are less fortunate than us. Our fellow Christians down in the valley at Capo Beach Calvary have opened a room during inclement weather so that some of our local homeless can find shelter at night . My sense is that the good folks who reach out do so not because they get a lot of ‘name recognition’, but rather in some way they themselves are blessed by the experience of helping. In a profound way, they touch the face of Christ.
Thank you for your generosity in our recent efforts at Haiti relief. Our school is preparing to do some local fundraising to send to Catholic Relief Services in Haiti. As a parish, your willingness to help, even though we did not take up a specific second collection, continues to come forward. Our communities at San Felipe de Jesus and St. Edward have raised over $10,000 with more still coming in. Many folks have been invited to go to Haiti to assist in healing the many wounds and injuries of the people. We will hold them in prayer and encourage those who wish to assist financially to continue to send donations through our parish, which will be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services.
Thank you for being the face of Christ in so many ways.

Queridos Feligreses,
Siempre me sorprende ver como los demás responden al sufrimiento de otros, aunque sean extraños. Nuestras intenciones son buenas, a pesar de que con frecuencia desconfiamos de otros, preguntándonos si la necesidad es verdadera o si la asistencia dada será usada correctamente. La gente en nuestra comunidad continúa ayudando a todos esos que necesitan alimentos y un lugar donde vivir. La sociedad de St. Vincent de Paul, o las personas de la oficina de Cristian Service, IHOPE, Welcome Inn y otros grupos en nuestra parroquia quien regularmente ayuda a los menos afortunados. Nuestros compañeros Cristianos en Capo Beach Calvary han abierto un lugar para toda esa gente desamparada que no tiene un lugar donde dormir especialmente con el cambio de clima que ahora estamos pasando. Mi sentido común me dice que; la gente buena que ayuda a los más necesitados no lo hacen por recibir un reconocimiento sino porque ellos han sido bendecidos con el don de ayuda. De una manera muy profunda ellos tocan el rostro de Cristo.
Gracias por su generosidad al ayudar a las personas de Haití. Nuestra escuela también se prepara para reunir fondos para el Catholic Relief Service en Haití. Como parroquia, su buena voluntad para ayudar es apreciada a pesar de que no hicimos una segunda colecta la ayuda continua llegando. La comunidad de San Felipe de Jesús y San Eduardo el Confesor ha reunido más de 10,000 dólares y esta cantidad continúa aumentado. Muchas personas han sido invitadas ir a Haití para ayudar en la curación de las heridas y lesiones de la gente. Vamos a oración y alentar a quienes deseen ayudar financieramente enviando donaciones a través de nuestra parroquia, que se transmitirá a Catholic Relief Services.

See what good influence you have on our younger members of our community! Emily Thomas, who has grown up in our
parish with her family was home recently from college and made an appeal to you to assist her in her mission. Take a minute
and read her recent reflection on her experience of this community. It says something really good about you!
Four and a half years ago I decided to pursue a mission with Regnum Christi. Today I want to inform you of my latest
venture in serving God's Church and also share with you the generosity I have experienced.
For the past four years Benedictine College has been traveling to El Salvador over spring break to build 3 to 4 houses through CFCA (Christian Foundation for the Children and the Aging, http://www.cfcausa.org/ ). The trip costs $1,500. $500 goes to building supplies and $1,000 to travel expenses and food. Considering the economic hardships many are experiencing, I knew that it was going to be difficult for me to ask people for money. The director of my group, Br. Leven, suggested I talk with my pastor, Fr. Sallot, and to speak with the Knights of Columbus at my parish. This past weekend after each Mass, a total of six, I stood outside with an empty jar and waited for people to give me money. I had a table set up with some flyers and posters with pictures my roommate had taken last spring break when she had traveled to El Salvador on the same mission trip. As the doors opened and people poured out I was suddenly overwhelmed with the realization that people were headed towards ME! I have to admit, I couldn't hold back the tears - I did not realize how generous people could be. From that first Mass alone I received $351.
I received many reactions - one man came up to speak with me told me he wasn't Catholic (just there with a relative) and said that his church did trips similar to mine. He wished me luck and threw some money in the jar. A few married couples as well as a handful of individuals shared their own experiences of mission trips to various places (Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, and others) or of the mission trips their relatives took. One little boy, about 10 years old, was looking at the pictures and then at the jar of money. As he walked away he said "I wish I had money to give." Some parents used the pictures and their donation as a teaching moment for their kids. One dad, speaking with his 7 year old daughter, said "See the house they have to live in? Ours is much nicer isn't it? Here, put this money in the jar." Others told me how happy they were to help me because they themselves could not go. Still others asked me if there was space for them on my trip! Or if I knew of another trip they could go on.
One of the reasons I wanted to share people's reactions with you is because often times we (including myself) can become discouraged when we see all the evil that is going on in the world - whether it's an economic crisis, sex scandals, divorce rate, shortage of priests, and so on. Hearing people's reactions gave me HOPE for God's work in the Church and through us, His lowly instruments. It was another reminder for me that the Catholic Church is alive and well. I think one of the best parts about the work I'll be doing is that I am continuing a 2,000 year tradition of helping those in need.
Sunday evening I counted up all that had been donated. The grand total was $2,150.67! $600 extra! The extra money goes to help those in my group that haven't been able to fundraise as much. It's a win-win situation! On top of this, I haven't even talked to the Knights of Columbus yet. Also, a number of people wanted to donate but didn't have money on hand. So I gave them my information so that they could send me their donation later!
What floors me most when I think back on what happened this weekend is not that I received more money than I needed
but that people's hearts were willing to help. Thank you again for ALL of the support you have given me financially, but
especially spiritually. May God bless you and keep you close to His Sacred Heart.

If you would still like to donate you can do so directly by going to the website www.crs.org or by bringing your gift to the parish office in an envelope marked ‘Haiti Relief’ or on Sunday in our regular collection. Dear Fellow Parishioners,
I want to share with you an event which happened late Sunday night, January 3, 2010. While we do not know all the facts and it will take several weeks for a complete police report, we do know the following:
A person or persons broke into Mary’s Corner evidently in an attempt to find money. Unsuccessful, they then broke into the church and attempted to find money. One safe containing the Sunday collection was damaged but unopened, and the other safe containing sacred vessels was also damaged but unopened. While some of the chalices were damaged, nothing was taken. That is good news along with the fact that no one was injured. As we know more of the facts, I will update our community. We are in the process of reviewing our current security procedures to do our best to insure everyone’s safety and security.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Welcome to the New Year! I am still uncertain whether to say “20-10” or “Two thousand and ten”. Hopefully I will have it figured out by February!
Last week, Rt. Rev. Ladislas Parker, O. Praem, the retired Abbot of the Norbertine Fathers at St. Michael’s Abbey in El Toro went home to the Lord. He was one of the original Norbertine fathers who escaped Hungary after the 1956 Revolution eventually coming to America. The six priests began teaching at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana and were there for many years. Many students, including myself, were formed in history, French, Latin, physics, as well as the Dean’s office by the Norbertine influence. Abbot Parker was very influential in forming their current religious community, always very gracious to me, and strong in faith. I know many in our parish are close to the Norbertines. Pray for him as well as the Norbertine fathers in this time of his passing.
As pastor I was deeply touched by your generous giving to the parish through the annual Offertory Program as well as many year-end gifts to the parish and to specific needs. In these hard times, your generosity is even more graced! May the Lord bless us all in this New Year!
If you run a business, you may wish to consider joining Legatus, an international organization of Catholic business leaders and their spouses. Please check the bulletin for more details. There are several chapters in Orange County but the two closest are the San Juan Capistrano Chapter and the South Coast Chapter. We have a number of parishioners who are already part of this tremendous organization and I have been to a number of their meetings over the years. They are an impressive group!
On January 18 and 19, Fr. Alfred Winsham SJ will be here for two evenings of reflection. He is an experienced retreat director and speaker on Eucharistic Healing and Marian discipleship in Jesus. He comes highly recommended. Make a New Year’s resolution now to be drawn more deeply into the love of Christ for us.

Feliz año nuevo! Yo aún estoy dudando si quiero decir "20-10" o "Dos mil diez". Espero que ya lo tenga asimilado para Febrero!
La semana pasada, Rt. Rev. Ladislas Parker, o. Praem, el ya retirado Abad de los Padres Nordestinos en Abbey de San Miguel en el Toro, se nos fue a casa con el Señor. Fue uno de los primeros padres Nordestinos que escaparon de Hungría después de la Revolución del 1956 llegando a América. Los seis sacerdotes comenzaron a enseñar en el Instituto Mater Dei en Santa Ana y están allí desde hace muchos años. Muchos estudiantes, incluyéndome a mí, se formaron en historia, francés, latín, física, así como Oficina de Dean’s por la influencia de los Nordestinos. Abad Parker fue muy influyente en la formación de su comunidad religiosa actual, fue una buena influencia para mí y con una gran fe. Sé que muchos en nuestra parroquia están cerca de los Nordestinos. Oren por él, así como los padres nordestinos lo hacen en este momento de su fallecimiento.
Como Pastor me toco profundamente su generosidad a la parroquia a través del programa anual de Ofertorio, así como muchos regalos de fin de año y necesidades específicas. En estos tiempos difíciles, su generosidad es aún más bendecida! Que el Señor los bendiga a todos en este año nuevo!
Si usted tiene un negocio, puede que quiera considerar unirse al Legado, una organización internacional de empresarios católicos y sus cónyuges. Por favor, consulte el boletín para más detalles. Hay varias organizaciones en el condado de Orange, pero las dos más cercanas son la de San Juan Capistrano y en la Costa Sur. Contamos con un gran número de feligreses que ya forman parte de esta gran organización y he ido a varias de sus reuniones durante los últimos años. Son un grupo impresionante!

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Good intentions for our New Year! Many thanks for the Christmas treats and gifts to our parish staff. We pretty much consumed everything from cookies to cakes! The extra calories and carbohydrates cause us, (well, alright me!) to set a new course of slimming down.
As we begin this new year of Grace, our Pastoral Council continues to develop as a group. As I have mentioned in prior bulletins, the Pastoral Council is to be a 'Wisdom Council' to the pastor. In order for that to happen, we have been in a learning process for many months of forming ourselves as individuals and as a council. In early February, we will be convening an evening of listening to other leaders in our parish community of St. Edward/San Felipe de Jesus. In this gathering we hope to elicit hopes and dreams of our parish to establish pastoral goals over the next 3 years. This gathering will consist of staff and parishioners working together to discuss what should be the focus of parish resources and energies in the future. The Pastoral Council will take this information and develop reasonable and workable pastoral goals for our parish community. I look forward to this process in early February and I trust the Spirit will lead and guide us!

Buenas deseos para el año nuevo! Muchas gracias por sus detalles esta Navidad y por los regalos a nuestro personal de la parroquia. Comí prácticamente de todo, desde galletas hasta pasteles! Las calorías y carbohidratos extra que consumí nos hacen, (bueno, me hacen!) establecer un nuevo curso para adelgazar.
Al comenzar este nuevo año de gracia, nuestro Consejo Pastoral continúa desarrollándose como grupo. Como he mencionado en boletines anteriores, el Consejo Pastoral es un "Consejo de sabios" para mi como pastor. A fin de que esto ocurra, hemos estado en un proceso de aprendizaje durante muchos meses para formarnos como individuos y como Consejo. A principios de Febrero, convocaremos una velada para escuchar a otros líderes en nuestra comunidad parroquial de San Eduardo/San Felipe de Jesús. En esta reunión esperamos suscitar esperanzas y sueños de nuestra parroquia para establecer objetivos pastorales en los próximos 3 años. Este encuentro consistirá del personal de la parroquia y feligreses trabajando juntos para discutir, enfocándose en los recursos y energías de esta parroquia en el futuro. El Consejo Pastoral tomará esta información y desarrollaran metas pastorales razonables y viables para nuestra comunidad parroquial. Espero con entusiasmo esta velada a principios de Febrero y confío en que el espíritu santo nos conducirá y guiara por el camino correcto!

For our annual visitors to St. Edward the Confessor and San Felipe de Jesus please know you are most welcome. The church is beautiful, our worship is enhanced because you are here and we hope our faith bolsters yours as yours does for us. May we find graces abundant together today!
Phew! I put my vote in that Christmas should be a ‘moveable feast’ as is Easter! For many of us celebrating Christmas so close to our regular Sunday liturgy can leave us with the feeling, “Weren’t we just here?”
Be that as it may, I wish to thank all of you as regular parishioners who made this Advent season a time of true preparation for a deeper birthing of our Savior into our lives and by that grace more deeply into our world. To the many ministers of Word and Eucharist, to the volunteers who hoisted trees and lights, to cantors and choirs who pronounced the expectant coming of Christ, to staff and priests who organized, prepared and followed through on ideas and plans for Advent and Christmas, to parking attendants who successfully dodged cars in a packed parking lot, I am most grateful to all of you. It is our gift to the Lord who was and is gift to us.

Para nuestros visitantes anuales a San Eduardo el Confesor y San Felipe de Jesús deben saber que ustedes son bienvenidos. La Iglesia esta hermosa, nuestra celebración destaca porque ustedes están aquí esperemos que nuestro almohadón de fe sea tal y como la el suyo. Y que podamos encontrar gracias abundantes juntos hoy!
Yo doy mi voto en que la Navidad debería ser una 'fiesta móvil' como es la Pascua! Para muchos de nosotros celebrar la Navidad tan cerca a nuestra liturgia dominical puede dejarnos con la sensación de, ¿Que no acabábamos de estar aquí?
Sea como fuere, me gustaría dar las gracias a todos ustedes como feligreses regulares quienes hicieron esta temporada de Adviento un momento de verdadera preparación para la llegada de nuestro Salvador a nuestras vidas y con la misma gracia al mundo. A todos los ministros de La Palabra y la Eucaristía, a los voluntarios que pusieron árboles y luces, cantores y coros que anunciaron la llegada de Cristo, al personal y sacerdotes que organizaron, prepararon y dieron seguimiento a los planes e ideas de Adviento y Navidad, a todos aquellos que ayudaron en el estacionamiento de la parroquia para que los automóviles pudieran estacionarse correctamente en este lugar tan saturado, estoy muy agradecido con todos ustedes. Es nuestro regalo al Señor quien fue y es un regalo para nosotros.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
At 5am on Saturday, December 12, it was dark and chilly outside as we huddled for warmth inside our San Felipe de Jesus chapel to sing our greetings to the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas. We then shared in the Eucharist ending our novena led by Fr. Domingo Zambrana S.T. who has been a long time friend to this community. We continued to break bread with hot chocolate, sweet bread and conversation as we celebrated our Mother’s love for her people, especially those who are often unnoticed by our societies. The humility and closeness of the Virgin to her people is a powerful witness to the child Jesus who is soon to become our Redeemer.
This Advent season gives us many such signs of grace. I experienced grace last weekend during our Confirmation Retreat in Irvine. With the combined group of over 150 students from San Felipe and St. Edward, Neil Sampson our Confirmation Director and Marisa Stock our Youth Minister, along with our SURF team and parents invited our young people to enter into the life of the Spirit. I was so touched by the student’s participation in this community building retreat.
Last week Donna Couch our Faith Formation Director guided the school faculty in a prayer experience utilizing our new Labyrinth (check out the bulletin and website for more information). We are offering this time of prayer for the parish in the Advent season. It is a way of drawing close to God’s grace in this season. Come and find your way to the center with the Lord.
On Monday, December 14 at 7pm we will be offering a family reconciliation service for the parish. Confessions will be available both in English and Spanish. Join us for the trace of grace with the Lord’s forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Another graced time being offered this Advent will be at our neighboring parish of St. Timothy. On December 21 at 7:30pm St Timothy’s will offer the ‘Longest Night Prayer Service’ for those of us who find these holidays difficult times because of losses or separations. You are most welcome to join in this hope filled liturgy. May it be an evening of consolation for you. (Check the invitation in the bulletin).
These and many opportunities of grace are signs of a spirit filled parish community. Your support and participation helps so much to keep this all moving forward as well as deepens the faith life of so many persons. I would ask if you receive a letter from the parish in the coming week regarding your participation in our annual Offertory Program that you would gracefully respond to the call to support your parish.

Queridos Feligreses,
A las 5 de la mañana el sábado, 12 de diciembre, estaba oscuro y frío nos juntamos todos para calentarnos dentro de nuestra capilla de San Felipe de Jesús y cantar nuestras alabanzas a la Virgen de Guadalupe, la patrona de las Américas. A continuación, hemos compartido en la Eucaristía final nuestra novena dirigida por el padre Domingo Zambrana S.T., quien ha sido un amigo de mucho tiempo en esta comunidad. Hemos continuado comiendo pan con chocolate caliente, pan dulce y conversaciones en como celebramos el amor de nuestra madre por su pueblo, especialmente aquellos que pasan inadvertidos por nuestra sociedad. La humildad y la proximidad de la Virgen a su pueblo es un testigo potente del niño Jesús que pronto esta por convertirse en nuestro Redentor.
Esta temporada de Adviento nos da muchos signos de gracia. Yo experimenté una gracia muy especial el pasado fin de semana durante nuestro retiro de confirmación en Irvine. Con un grupo de más de 150 estudiantes, combinados de San Felipe y Edward St, Neil Sampson nuestro director de confirmación y Marisa Stock nuestra Ministro de juventud, junto con nuestro equipo SURF y padres invitaron a nuestros jóvenes a entrar en la vida del espíritu. Estaba tan tocado por la participación de los estudiantes en este retiro.
La semana pasada Donna Couch nuestra directora de formación de fe guiada por la Facultad de la escuela en una oración utilizando el nuevo laberinto (esta en el boletín y el sitio Web para obtener más información). Estamos ofreciendo esta forma de oración por la parroquia en la temporada de Adviento. Es una forma para acercarnos más a la gracia de Dios en esta temporada. Venga usted a encontrar su camino al centro con el Señor.
El lunes, 14 de diciembre a las 7 de la tarde nos ofrecerán un servicio de reconciliación familiar para la parroquia. Confesiones estarán disponibles tanto en español e inglés. Únase a nosotros y demos seguimiento a los rasgos de gracia para obtener el perdón del Señor en el Sacramento de la reconciliación.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
“Hey Father Steve….sssshhhhh!!!! Don’t you know it’s Advent?” I had just finished giving loud hello’s to a group of our young school students who were lining up in front of the church to make a visit during a weekday. I sheepishly nodded, gave them a quick blessing and shuffled on my way. Advent has indeed begun! It is unfortunately a liturgical season which can get lost between Thanksgiving stuffing and Christmas preparations and parties. Advent is meant to be a quiet and reflective season for us as Catholics when we take a long lovingly look at our faith journey and to create some space in our lives to meet Christ again and to be thankful for the lovingly actions of our redemption.
This is why the liturgy committee has helped to change our liturgical environment a bit in an attempt to get us to slow down in a time of quiet and reflection. You may notice the music and singing has a softer tempo, the church lighting is less bright, our evening liturgies are enhanced with projected sacred images, and the overall mood is quieter. Hopefully a slight shift in our liturgical environment will help you turn your minds and hearts to Jesus our Redeemer in this season of anticipated waiting.
I would like to report to you our current responses from our parish’s recent Offertory Program. You are well aware that this is a time when we ask you, as a parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor/San Felipe de Jesus, to make an intentional commitment to financially support your parish. This is not mandatory, but rather is a response to God’s grace and blessings in our lives. As of this week, 1,063 have filled out a commitment card. This time last year our number of commitments was 1,651. Certainly the economic uncertainties play a large part in the drop of parishioner commitments this year. I would ask that if you have not yet made a commitment yet this year, please be aware that you will be receiving mail from me in the next couple of weeks asking you to consider your commitment. For those who have made their commitment I thank you for your sacrifice to the life and ministries of our great parish community. May we continue to journey together in these challenging times!

Estimados Feligreses,
"Hey padre Steve….sssshhhhh!!!! Es tiempo de Adviento?" Había terminado de dar unos fuerte saludos a un grupo de estudiantes jóvenes, que fueron a la iglesia un día de la semana para realizar una visita. Les di una bendición rápida y seguí mi camino. Adviento, de hecho, ya ha comenzado! Es una temporada que puede perderse entre el día de acción de gracias y las fiestas Navideñas. Adviento pretende ser una temporada tranquila y de reflexión para nosotros para buscar nuestro camino de fe y para crear un espacio en nuestras vidas y volver a reunirse con Cristo y ser agradecidos con el por las acciones de nuestra redención.
Esta es la razón por la cual la Comisión de liturgia ha ayudado a cambiar nuestro entorno litúrgico un poco, en un intento de conseguir frenar en una época de tranquilidad y reflexión. Puede observar en la música y los cantos que tiene un ritmo más suave, la iluminación de la Iglesia es menos brillante, nuestras liturgias de noche se han mejorado con imágenes sagradas proyectadas y el estado de ánimo general es más silencioso. Es de esperar que un ligero cambio en nuestro entorno litúrgico le ayudara a convertir sus mentes y corazones a Jesús nuestro Redentor en esta temporada de espera.
Me gustaría informarles acerca de nuestras respuestas actuales del programa de Ofertorio de nuestra parroquia. Saben muy bien que este es un momento cuando le pedimos que, como un feligrés de San Eduardo el Confesor/San Felipe de Jesús, para hacer un compromiso intencional para apoyar financieramente su parroquia. Esto no es obligatorio, pero es más bien una respuesta a la gracia de Dios y las bendiciones en nuestras vidas. Esta semana, 1,063 han rellenado una tarjeta de compromiso. Por estos días el año pasado nuestro número de compromisos fue 1,651. Sin duda la incertidumbre económica desempeña un papel importante en la caída de los compromisos de este año. Le pido que si usted no ha hecho aún un compromiso este año, por favor, tenga en cuenta que va a recibir correo de mí en las próximas dos semanas y se le pedirá tener en cuenta su compromiso. Dear Fellow Parishioners,
As our Advent season quickly approaches, we will soon be listening to the promises of the Scriptures declaring the coming of the Savior. It is repeated every year in our liturgical calendar reminding us not only what happened long ago, but the ongoing need for a deeper conversion to Christ in our own personal lives. May we remain attentive to the call of discipleship in this season.
I asked the priests in the house today how to get tomato stains out of my vestments. We laughed for a moment because for the past two weeks we have been speaking about our annual Parish Offertory Program from the pulpit. The only tomato tossed at me was from Fr. Chris! I wish to express my sincere gratitude to all of you who listened and considered what ‘fair share’ you might give back to the Lord in the coming year as a financial commitment to our parish. Thanks to Randy Redwitz, Chair of our Finance Committee as well as Art Fajardo, a longtime member of the Finance Committee who gave of their time to share the pulpit with me a couple of weeks ago. I am most grateful for those you who not only considered but also committed a pledge for the coming year. I know the sacrifice you are making and our parish community will continue to be a source of grace for many because of your generosity.
Several months ago I wrote a few articles on the forming of a Pastoral Council. We began with inviting parishioners to come and hear about the meaning of a Pastoral Council. About 75 persons came to hear Sr. Regina Fox, a consultant for Pastoral Councils. From those 75 about 30 persons wished to understand more about a council. From another extensive process of listening, learning and sharing, the group was gleaned to 12 persons, a workable size for a council. These persons are now preparing to become a Pastoral Council. It has been a tremendous experience for me because I see the deep faith and commitment from so many persons. We are also beginning to prepare for an Assembly process scheduled for Monday evening, February 8, 2010. You will be hearing more about this in the coming months. Please keep us all in prayer as we learn to become the listening and focusing part of our parish leadership.
The 12 members of the Formative Council are all parishioners of St. Edward the Confessor/San Felipe de Jesus.

Estimados Feligreses,
A medida que se aproxima rápidamente nuestra temporada de Adviento, pronto escucharemos las promesas de las escrituras declarando la venida de nuestro Salvador. Se repite cada año en nuestro calendario litúrgico recordándonos no sólo lo que ocurrió hace mucho tiempo, pero la permanente necesidad para una más profunda conversión a Cristo en nuestras propias vidas personales. Podemos seguimos atentos a la llamada de discipulado en esta temporada.
Pregunté a los sacerdotes en la casa hoy cómo obtener las manchas de tomate de mi indumentaria. Nos reímos por un momento dado que las dos últimas semanas hemos estado hablando acerca de nuestro programa anual de Ofertorio parroquial desde el púlpito. El tomate lanzado fue por el Padre Chris! Quiero expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos ustedes que habían escuchado y consideran un 'reparto justo', que podría retribuir al Señor en el año que viene como un compromiso financiero a nuestra parroquia. Gracias a Randy Redwitz, Presidente de nuestra Comisión de finanzas, así como a Art Fajardo, quien ha sido miembro del Comité por mucho tiempo para la financiación quien dio de su tiempo para compartir el púlpito conmigo hace un par de semanas. Estoy muy agradecido por aquellos que no sólo consideran pero también hicieron una promesa para el próximo año. Sé que el sacrificio que está realizando y nuestra comunidad parroquia seguirá siendo una fuente de gracia para muchos por su generossidad.
Hace varios meses escribí un par de artículos sobre la formación de un Consejo Pastoral. Comenzamos por invitar a los feligreses para oír sobre el significado de un Consejo Pastoral. Aproximadamente 75 personas vinieron a escuchar a Sor Regina Fox, una consultora de consejos pastorales. De las 75 personas, 30 desean conocer más acerca de un Consejo pastoral. De un proceso extenso de escuchar, aprender y compartir, el grupo fue recopilado por 12 personas, un tamaño viable para un Consejo. Estas personas están preparadas ahora para convertirse en Consejo Pastoral. Ha sido una experiencia enorme para mí porque veo la profunda fe y el compromiso de tantas personas. También estamos empezando a prepararnos para un proceso de Asamblea previsto para el lunes por la noche, el 8 de Febrero del 2010. Usted será informado sobre esto en los próximos meses. Por favor manténganos en sus oraciones para aprender a ser el oído y el enfoque principal en esta parroquia.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Last week I shared with you about the hard work of the Parish Strategic Planning Committee to develop a ‘large view’ of the parish and its future directions. By late spring of 2008, we created a ‘white paper’ as a summary of our findings. I would like to share that document with you at a later date. We realized it was necessary to find an architectural firm early in this process so as to carefully plan the best and most cost effective design for a Pastoral Center (such as, how will we get an aqua slide from the roof to the harbor?).
At first glance, it would appear to be an easy task to hire an architect. Our committee came up with the names of 14 architectural firms, firms that members of the committee knew from prior experience or had heard of their good reputation. We solicited these firms to visit with us at our church site. 13 firms responded to a presentation by the Strategic Planning Committee. The firms also had the opportunity to walk around the campus and get a sense of the unique opportunity to design a Pastoral Center. Also at this time, the committee received the various firm’s qualifications (RFQ’s, Request for Qualifications). Based on this information, the Committee invited 7 firms to interview with us further by making a presentation of a basic project proposal. The committee then spent 2 arduous days interviewing and discussing the firm’s proposals. By consensus, we were able to narrow our selection to 2 finalists. After reinterviewing the architectural teams as well as performing careful background checks, we selected the Newport Beach firm of Bauer and Wiley for the conceptual design of the Pastoral Center. At first glance you might not recognize their name, but locally they designed the Ocean Institute in the Dana Point Harbor. We were impressed by their desire for this unique project as well as their ability to design not only quality functional space but also their ability to work closely with the owners of prior projects.
In September, 2009 we requested and received approval from Bishop Tod Brown as well as the Diocesan Construction Office to utilize Bauer and Wiley as our architect of record for the Conceptual Design Phase of our Pastoral Center and renovation of the Church. This means that the Diocese recognizes the quality of their work and gives us permission to spend up to $130,000 including contingency to develop, design and submit to the Diocesan Construction Committee for approval of concept. At first glance, this may seem like a lot of money, but to do this project correctly requires an incredible amount of time, energy and pre-work. Since September, we have been meeting on a regular basis with the architectural team in order to develop a working time line for the project. A needs assessment has been received from our parish and school administrative staff as well as from the heads of our many parish ministries. As the information is gathered and discussed, we are beginning to see how we can best meet the many needs of the ministries and administration of the parish community. It is an exciting process and one I want to keep you in the loop about. As soon as we develop a conceptual design, I intend to share it with you for your input and comments.
In looking at some renovation of our parish church in order to reflect current liturgical practice, we are interviewing several liturgical consultants who have strong reputations for renovations. I will let you know when we narrow down the field of consultants.

La semana pasada compartí con ustedes acerca de la difícil tarea del Comité Parroquial de Planeamiento Estratégico de crear una “visión amplia” sobre el futuro de nuestra parroquia. Durante la primavera del año pasado resumimos en un bosquejo los diferentes descubrimientos que encontramos. Me gustaría compartir con ustedes acerca de dicho documento en una fecha próxima. Sin embargo, nos dimos cuenta que era importante encontrar una compañía arquitectónica al principio del proyecto con el fin de planear el mejor y más económico proyecto de construcción para el Centro Pastoral.
A primera vista, pudiera decirse que contratar a un arquitecto es cosa fácil. Nuestro comité sugirió a catorce diferentes compañías arquitectónicas, estas compañías fueron recomendadas por miembros del comité que les conocían basados en previas experiencias o habían escuchado sobre su buena reputación. Les solicitamos a estas compañías que nos visitaran para que observaran la propiedad parroquial. Trece compañías mostraron interés a la invitación que se les hizo por parte de nuestro Comité Parroquial de Planeamiento Estratégico. Estas compañías tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar nuestra propiedad parroquial y así tener una mejor idea de cómo construir un centro pastoral. Al mismo tiempo, el comité recibió las diferentes calificaciones de parte de las compañías (RFQ, Requisito para Calificaciones).
Basados en esta información, el comité invito a siete compañías a ser entrevistadas y presentar un proyecto básico para ser evaluado. El comité entonces dedico dos días para entrevistar a dichas compañías y dialogar respecto a los proyectos presentados. Por votación, pudimos reducir el número de compañías a dos. Después de entrevistar a los equipos arquitectónicos y revisar su historia de trabajo, seleccionamos a la compañía «Bauer and Wiley» de Neport Beach sobre todo por su diseño conceptual del Centro Pastoral. Tal vez no reconozca el nombre de esta compañía, sin embargo ellos diseñaron el «Instituto Ocean» del muelle de Dana Point. A nosotros nos impresionó su deseo por trabajar en este proyecto único y su habilidad de diseñar una instalación de calidad utilizando de la mejor manera posible el espacio disponible. Además tienen un buen historial de haber trabajado muy de cerca con propietarios pasados en sus proyectos.
En septiembre de este año recibimos el permiso por parte del obispo Tod Brown como también de la Oficina Diocesana de Construcción de contratar la compañía «Bauer and Wiley» como los arquitectos de nuestro proyecto para el Centro Pastoral hasta ahora sólo diseñado conceptualmente y también para la renovación de la parroquia. Esto significa que la diócesis reconoce la calidad de su trabajo y nos da permiso de invertir un promedio de $130,000.00 dólares que incluye contingencia a construir y diseñar para ser sometido al Comité de Construcción Diocesano y recibir su aprobación final. A primera vista, esto puede parecer como demasiado dinero, pero para llevar a cabo este proyecto se requiere muchísimo tiempo, energía y preparación. Dear Fellow Parishioners,
For the past several weeks I have been sharing with you some of our parish history and development. Last week I reflected on the combining of San Felipe de Jesus parish to St. Edward the Confessor. I also wrote about our Parish Strategic Planning Committee as well as the selection of an architect for our Master Plan. More in a moment on our process in developing a direction for our future.
With coffee and croissants in hand, our Parish Strategic Planning committee consisting of ten parishioners, myself, a staff member as well as a diocesan resource person, met on several early Monday mornings in 2008. We reviewed the previous 1999 development plan, discussed what we currently have available to us now, studied current and projected demographics in our South County region and attempted to get a ‘large look’ at our parish and its needs. We also looked at other parish sites to get ideas as to how to respond to growing parish needs. Three essential areas of parish life became apparent from our study and discussions. They are worship, service and formation.
The Parish Strategic Planning Committee clearly saw the need to locate the Pastoral Center in close proximity to the parish church so there would be an easy flow between the worship, service and formation components of our parish life. The parish church also needs to be clearly identified as a focal point of our parish site. The church needs to be evaluated for current liturgical practices, renovated inside to enhance the liturgical environment and developed to create a more significant gathering area for parishioners before and after our liturgies. In order to position the Pastoral Center properly the current rectory needed to be relocated either on or offsite the parish property. The Parish Strategic Planning Committee also recognized that we are in a very unique and beautiful site and took into consideration our surrounding environment when discussing future development plans. While the school was doubled in size in 2000, there was still a need to review and update the facility in terms of space usage and technology to better enhance the learning environment for our students. Outreach ministries would probably continue onsite, but the Parish Strategic Planning Committee also saw the opportunity for outreach offsite as well.
The recommendation was made by the Parish Strategic Planning Committee that during the drop in housing market prices that perhaps a suitable offsite rectory might be identified. With the generous assistance of one our parishioners long involved in local real estate, we looked at a number of possibilities, and finally settled on a bank owned fourplex near Dana Hills High School, less than a mile from the parish. We requested and received from the diocese as well as our parish Finance Commission, permission to purchase the property with funds available to us from our reserves. Currently, it is being refurbished with the goal of moving in the first part of next year. At first glance, this may be a source of consternation from some parishioners who feel that the priests should live onsite, but it does allow the Pastoral Center to be built close to the church and opens up additional property for future usage on our site for ample facilities for service and formation which are vital to our parish life. I can also assure you that it is much healthier to live away from where one works and that our availability to the parish will not diminish in any way.
More next week about the selection of our architect as well as our planning process for the Pastoral Center.

En las últimas semanas estado compartiendo con ustedes acerca de la historia y crecimiento de nuestra parroquia. La semana pasada compartí con ustedes acerca de cómo la parroquia de San Felipe de Jesús se unió con San Eduardo el Confesor. También escribí sobre el Comité Parroquial de Planeamiento Estratégico al igual que la selección de un arquitecto para nuestro proyecto maestro. Ahora escribiré sobre el proceso de crecimiento acerca de nuestra dirección hacia el futuro.
Con un café y pan en mano, nuestro Comité Parroquial de Planeamiento Estratégico que consiste de diez feligreses, mi persona, un empleado y un representante de la diócesis nos reunimos en varios lunes por la mañana durante el 2008. Juntos repasamos el plan de construcción de 1999, dialogamos sobre lo que tenemos disponible ahora, estudiamos la actual y futura demografía de la región del Sur del Condado e intentamos proyectar una visión más amplia sobre nuestra parroquia y sus necesidades. Al hacer esto descubrimos tres áreas esenciales acerca de la vida de nuestra parroquia. Estas áreas son la adoración, el servicio y la formación.
El Comité Parroquial de Planeamiento Estratégico miró con claridad la necesidad de ubicar el Centro Pastoral cerca de la Iglesia para que surja un flujo fácil entre la adoración, el servicio y la formación que son componentes esenciales para la vida de nuestra parroquia. La iglesia se debe identificar como el punto visual y céntrico del sitio de nuestra parroquia. La iglesia debe ser evaluada por las actuales prácticas de liturgia, necesita ser renovada por dentro para mejorar el ambiente litúrgico y crear un lugar más significativo que facilite el compartir de nuestros feligreses antes y después de nuestras liturgias. Con el propósito de ubicar el Centro Parroquial apropiadamente la actual rectoría necesitaba ser transferida a otra ubicación ya sea dentro de la misma propiedad o fuera de ésta. El Comité Parroquial de Planeamiento Estratégico reconoció que nos encontramos en un lugar único y bello y por esta razón tomó en consideración los alrededores de nuestro medio ambiente al dialogar acerca de nuestro plan de construcción. A pesar de que la escuela duplico sus instalaciones en el 2000, existe aún la necesidad de evaluar y actualizar sus instalaciones en términos del uso de espacio y tecnología con el fin de mejorar el aprendizaje de sus estudiantes. Los ministerios de ayuda continuarán dando sus servicios dentro de la propiedad, sin embargo, el Comité Parroquial de Planeamiento Estratégico también consideró la oportunidad de proveer servicios de ayuda fuera de la propiedad.
El Comité Parroquial de Planeamiento Estratégico recomendó que durante la actual economía donde el valor de las viviendas bajó se buscara una posible rectoría fuera de la propiedad parroquial. Con la asistencia de uno de nuestros feligreses con una gran experiencia en bienes y raíces visitamos varias propiedades y finalmente nos decidimos por una propiedad de cuatro apartamentos ubicada cerca de la escuela preparatoria Dana Hills, a tan sólo menos de una milla de distancia de la parroquia. Solicitamos y recibimos permiso de la diócesis y de nuestro Comité de Finanzas de comprar dicha propiedad. Logramos hacer la compra con fondos de reserva que la parroquia contaba. Actualmente, dicha unidad de apartamentos se encuentra en remodelación con la meta de poder mudarse a principios del próximo año. A primera vista, esto puede ser motivo de consternación para algunos parroquianos que opinan que los sacerdotes deben vivir en seguida de la iglesia; sin embargo, esto facilita la construcción del Centro Parroquial enseguida de la iglesia y amplia la propiedad para un futuro uso de más instalaciones que faciliten el servicio y la formación los cuales son elementos vitales para la vida de nuestra parroquia. Además, yo les aseguro que es mucho más sano el vivir apartado del lugar donde uno trabaja. No por esto va a disminuir de alguna manera nuestra disponibilidad hacia la parroquia.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
For the last 2 weeks in our parish bulletin I have been sharing with you some of our history as a parish, as well as the beginning of a process for thinking about our future. I would like to share with you more about our San Felipe de Jesus Mission as well as the formation of our Strategic Planning Committee.
“Now, where is San Felipe?” At first glance, when one exits the freeway heading to Pacific Coast Highway your eye catches the color of a school bus yard. If you are to look across the street from the bus yard, you will see a small brown church. That is San Felipe de Jesus, a living symbol of our Catholic faith since 1950. It was established as St. Edward the Confessor (named after the son of Mr. Doheny. Sound like a familiar name?). San Felipe has served the needs of parishioners in that area for many years and finally was established as a canonical parish in 1981 by Bishop Johnson. He rightly saw the need to expand the services to the Hispanic community, which was starting to grow in South County.
The parish was renamed San Felipe de Jesus after the first Mexican saint (another legend is that the Bishop named it after Deacon Jesse Michel who was the administrator and whose first name is Felipe!). The little church down the street from Lucy’s El Patio restaurant remains a vital part of the folks living in the Capo Beach area as well as many Hispanic families living beyond that immediate area. Finally, in 2004, when Fr. John Bradley retired as pastor of San Felipe, Bishop Brown asked me to administrate the parish. Since that time, the staffs of St. Edward and San Felipe have worked together. In 2008, Bishop Brown, through a consultative process, changed the status of San Felipe to a Chapel. Combining our communities has been a graced opportunity for us to share resources and a common faith. As we go forward, we will continue to strengthen each other. And that is and will be a good thing.
With the expanding needs of our communities, I initiated a process to look at our futures together. In September 2007, a number of parishioners were invited to form a Strategic Planning Committee to take a “30,000” foot view of the needs of our communities. We utilized the skills of a diocesan consultant as well as a planning consultant. It was quite a revealing experience for me. First, I was truly impressed by the committee’s talents and abilities, and was touched by their deep concern and love for our communities. As we continued to meet on a regular basis, a vision began to develop. By April 2008, the committee summarized its findings and determined that it was important to begin developing a master plan to respond to our parish needs now and into the future. A list of architects was put together and 13 architects were invited to a presentation and walk the property in May of 2008. Through a collaborative process to determine the best architect for our future, the committee made its recommendation. Based on that recommendation, I asked for and received permission from our Diocese to begin a pre-planning process. More on this to come next week!

En las últimas dos semanas en el boletín de la parroquia he compartido con ustedes la historia de esta parroquia, así como el comienzo de un proyecto pensando en el futuro. Quisiera compartir con ustedes la misión de San Felipe de Jesús así como la formación de un comité estratégico de planificación.
¿Dónde se encuentra San Felipe? Al salir de la autopista 5 hacia el Pacific Coast Highway usted puede ver el estacionamiento de los autobuses de la escuela a su derecha, cruzando la calle verá una iglesia pequeña, color café, esa es la Iglesia de San Felipe de Jesús, un símbolo viviente de nuestra fe Católica desde 1950. Fue establecida como San Eduardo el Confesor (nombrada después del hijo del Señor Doheny. ¿Les suena conocido este nombre?) San Felipe ha servido a las diferentes necesidades de muchos feligreses y lo ha hecho por muchos años. Finalmente fue establecida como una parroquia canónica en 1981 por el Obispo Johnson. Luego, el Obispo vio la necesidad de ampliar los servicios a la comunidad Hispana, con justa razón, la cual está creciendo mucho en este condado. La Parroquia de San Felipe de Jesús fue nombrada después del primer santo Mexicano (otra leyenda cuenta que el señor obispo la nombró en honor al Diácono Jesse Michel quien era el administrador en ese tiempo y su primer nombre es Felipe). La pequeña iglesia cruzando la calle del restaurante de Lucy “El Patio” es parte vital de todos los residentes de Capistrano Beach al igual que para muchas familias hispanas que viven a sus alrededores. Finalmente, en el 2004, cuando el sacerdote Juan Bradley se retiro como párroco de San Felipe, el señor obispo Brown me pidió que tomara la administración de la iglesia. Desde entonces, los empleados de San Eduardo y San Felipe han trabajado juntos. En el 2008 el señor obispo Brown, a través de un proceso de diálogo, cambio el status de San Felipe de parroquia a capilla; combinando nuestras comunidades y compartiendo nuestros recursos y fe. Caminando hacia adelante continuaremos apoyándonos los unos a otros. Y eso es, y será algo muy bueno.
Con motivo de las necesidades de nuestra comunidad de expandir nuestras instalaciones, yo inicie un proyecto para poder ver juntos hacia el futuro. En septiembre de 2007, un grupo de feligreses fue invitado a formar un comité de planificación para ver todas las necesidades de nuestras comunidades desde una visión que consta de 30,000 pies. Utilizamos las habilidades de expertos en esta área tanto de la diócesis como de aquellos que se dedican a planificar. Fue una experiencia muy reveladora para mí. Primeramente, me impresionó el talento y las habilidades de los miembros de este comité y fui conmovido por su profundo amor y preocupación por nuestra comunidad. Actualmente continuamos reuniéndonos con frecuencia y nos ha sido posible desarrollar dicha visión. En abril de 2008, el comité resumió sus descubrimientos y determinó que era importante crear un plan que responda adecuadamente a todas las necesidades actuales y del futuro. Entonces se realizó una lista de arquitectos y de ésta 13 arquitectos fueron invitados a participar en nuestro proyecto y a conocer la propiedad. Esto se llevó a cabo en mayo de 2008. A través de un proceso colectivo con el fin de determinar al mejor arquitecto para nuestro futuro, el comité presento su recomendación. Basados en esta recomendación, pedí y recibí permiso de nuestra diócesis para iniciar un proceso de pre-planificación. La próxima semana les seguiré contando más al respecto.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Last week I announced a series of bulletin articles being presented over the next several weeks. These articles will hopefully give some context for our parish moving forward based on a strategic plan for our future as a parish.
When my parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, my youngest brother (who is nine years younger) and I put together a short video of our parent’s lives. As John and I began to develop a storyline, we were surprised to realize how differently we spoke about the same set of parents. John remembered my father coming home exhausted and falling asleep in the chair before dinner while I remembered my father’s younger years when he would come home from one job, eat dinner and leave for his second job. I remembered my mother who helped me with my homework while my brother remembers my older sister helping him. It all depends on perspective.
As St. Edward the Confessor enters its 40th year as a parish, at first glance, it would seem that our parish structures have always been a part of this site. But taking another look, it is obvious that our parish has always been in some process of development as the needs of the community expanded. When Father Louis Knight, our founding pastor, moved from Capistrano Beach from what is now San Felipe de Jesus Chapel to this hilltop in 1969 a church was built (now Knight Hall), then an onsite rectory (the current rectory and business offices). As the community grew, the need for faith education became apparent. Fr. Knight, inspired by the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, allowed a school to be built with the understanding that it would also be utilized as a Religious Education building for the entire parish. Those were exciting years for our young parish. Outdoor masses on the bluff, the parish assembly, and a dream to build a more adequate church were all part of the dynamism of St. Edward’s. In 1995, the current church opened with the first Mass being Fr. Knight’s funeral liturgy. I remember being here for his funeral and even then, unfinished though it was, I realized it was a magnificent church.
As this area of South Orange County continued to develop in the 80’s and 90’s it became apparent that there was a need to expand the parish facilities. Office space was woefully inadequate and the need for meeting and gathering places was lacking based on the many needs of the parish. In the late 1990’s the parish developed a three phase plan to meet the needs of the community. A successful Capital Campaign took place enabling the parish to double the size of the school, provide preschool space, and add an additional two acres of necessary parking. The school required a significant amount of retrofitting which slowed down the development of the third phase of the Pastoral Center. But today our parish school is strong and vibrant and a blessing to the rest of the parish. The additional 2 acres makes an incredible difference for ease of access to our parish.
Along with the painful events of 2001 when our parish administration changed, we were not ready to move forward with the third phase. With the sage advice of parishioners, as the new pastor in 2002, I chose to wait until our parish community was experiencing restored trust and confidence. Also, it was clear that it would take a significant extension of the campaign in order to raise funds to build the Pastoral Center and I did not believe the parish was ready or willing to pursue that extended goal. Since that time, the parish has held the balance of the campaign funds in a restricted account.
Over the past seven years as pastor, I have seen our parish continue to develop as a community. Certainly it is a different community today in 2009 from when the parish started in 1969, but so is the world around us (Let’s see, I was a sophomore in high school in 1969!). Over the past several years, I have been constantly amazed at the resiliency of our community and the deep and abiding faith of so many wonderful people. Over the past seven years, we have been generous to the many needs of our community, to charities both local and far, and continue to be one of the strongest parishes in our diocese in finances. This is due to your generosity and the careful administration of our finances. We have in place an Accounting Manager who oversees all of the financial management of our parish, school, preschool, as well as San Felipe de Jesus Chapel. Our Finance Council is one of the best in the diocese, which meets on a monthly basis to assist in overseeing the budgets and help make financial decisions for the secure future of the parish. With this great team, the parish reserves are significant and we intend to utilize part of those funds as we move forward to develop and build our Pastoral Center.
As members of this parish community, whether you have been here long enough to remember eating breakfast with Richard Henry Dana at Proud Mary’s or you are so new that you have no idea where Proud Mary’s is located, know that you are part of a great parish with a long history of growth in faith and in place.
Next week, I will write about embracing San Felipe de Jesus as part of St. Edward’s as well as the formation of a Strategic Planning Committee.

Estimados Feligreses,
La semana pasada anuncie una serie de artículos en el boletín que se presentaran a través de las próximas semanas. Estos artículos si Dios quieres le darán contexto a la noción que nuestra parroquia se mueva hacia delante basada en un plan estratégico para el futuro.
Cuando mis padres celebraron su 40 aniversario, mi hermano menor (que es 9 años menor que yo) y yo hicimos un corto video de la vida de nuestros padres. Mientras John y yo empezábamos hacer la narrativa, nos sorprendimos al ver que diferente nos expresábamos del mismo par de padres. John se acordaba que mi padre llegaba cansado a casa y se quedaba dormido antes de la cena mientras que yo me acordaba que en sus años mas jóvenes el llegaba de un trabajo, comía y se iba al próximo. Yo me acuerdo que mi madre me ayudaba con la tarea mientras que mi hermano se acuerda que la que le ayudo fue mi hermana mayor. Todo depende de la perspectiva.
Mientras San Eduardo el Confesor entra a su 40 año como parroquia, a primera vista, parece que las estructuras siempre han sido parte de este sitio. Pero mirándolo de nuevo, es obvio que nuestra parroquia siempre ha estado en proceso de desarrollo mientras las necesidades de la comunidad se fueron engrandeciendo. Cuando el Padre Louis Knight, nuestro pastor fundador, mudo de Capistrano Beach de lo que ahora es la Capilla de San Felipe de Jesús ha esta cima en 1969 una Iglesia fue construida (ahora Knight Hall), luego una rectoría en la cima (de momento la rectoría y oficinas). Como fue creciendo la comunidad, la necesidad de una educación de fe se hacía más aparente. Padre Knight, inspirado por las enseñanzas del Segundo Concilio Vaticano, permitió que una escuela se construyera con el entendimiento que también se usaría como un edificio de Educación Religiosa para toda la parroquia. Aquellos eran años excitantes para nuestra parroquia joven. Misas afuera en el despeñadero, la asamblea parroquial, y un sueño de construir una Iglesia más adecuada para el dinamismo de San Eduardo. En 1995, la Iglesia que hoy en día conocemos abrió sus puertas con la primera Misa siendo el funeral del Padre Knight. Me acuerdo estando aquí en su funeral y en ese entonces, sin terminar, reconocí que era una magnifica Iglesia.
Mientras el área del Sur del Condado de Orange continuo a crecer en los 80’s y 90’s fue aparente que había la necesidad de ampliar las instalaciones parroquiales. Espacio de oficinas era tristemente inadecuado y la necesidad de lugares para juntas no eran suficientes basados en las necesidades de la Iglesia. En los 1990’s la parroquia creó un plan de tres fases para satisfacer las necesidades de la comunidad. Una Campaña de Capital exitosa permitió que la parroquia duplicara el tamaño de la escuela, proveerá espacio preescolar, y agregara dos acres de estacionamiento necesario. La escuela requirió de bastante trabajo de adaptación que demoro la tercera fase que es el Centro Pastoral. Pero hoy la escuela esta fuerte y vibrante y una bendición para el resto de la parroquia. Los dos acres adicionales haces acceso a la parroquia muy fácil.
Con los dolorosos eventos del 2001 cuando la administración de nuestra parroquia cambio, no estábamos listos para mover hacia la tercera fase. Con el sabio consejo de los feligreses, como nuevo pastor en el 2002, decidí esperar hasta que nuestra comunidad experimentara confianza restaurada. También, era claro que la extensión de la campaña sería necesaria para recaudar fondos y construir un centro pastoral y no creí que la parroquia estaba lista ni deseaba perseguir este fin. Desde ese tiempo, la parroquia ha detenido el balance de los fondos de las campañas en una cuenta restringida.
A través de los pasados siete años como pastor, yo he visto como nuestra parroquia continua creciendo como comunidad. Ciertamente es una diferente comunidad ahora en 2009 de cuando fue fundada en 1969, pero también el mundo que nos rodea lo es (hay que ver, yo estaba en segundo de preparatoria en 1969!). Al través de los últimos años, yo me he asombrado constantemente de la capacidad para adaptarse de nuestra comunidad y la fe profunda de tantas magnificas personas. En los últimos siete años, hemos sido generosos a las múltiples necesidades de nuestra comunidad, ha caridades locales y lejanas, y continuamos siendo una de las parroquias más fuertes en la diócesis en términos financieros. Esto es debido a la generosidad y cuidadosa administración de nuestra parroquia, la escuela, pre-escuela, igual como la Capilla de San Felipe de Jesús. Nuestro Consejo Financiero es uno de los mejores de la Diócesis, que se reúne mensualmente para asistir en revisar los presupuestos y ayudar hacer decisiones financieras que aseguren el futuro de la parroquia. Con este gran equipo, las reservas de la parroquia son significativas y planeamos utilizar parte de esos fondos mientras movemos hacia delante con el plan de construir un Centro Pastoral.
Como miembros de la comunidad parroquial, si ha estado aquí y se acuerda desayunando con Richard Henry Dana en Proud Mary’s o si es Nuevo a la parroquia y no tiene idea donde está ubicada Proud Mary’s, sea consciente de que eres parte de una gran parroquia con una historia larga crecimiento de fe y de lugar.
La próxima semana, escribiré sobre abrazando a San Felipe de Jesús como parte de San Eduardo igual como la formación del Comité Estratégico planeador.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Summer has faded into cooler, earlier fall evenings. School and faith formation classes have launched into full speed ahead. Our Sunday pews have filled in again as some folks take vacation during the summer months. It is at this time that I would like to begin to share with you the work and planning which has gone on for the past year and a half with regards to the future of our parish site and facilities. I believe I have good news to share with you.
Over the next several weeks I would like to update you and remind us all where we started, what we have done and where we hope to go. I am most thankful to a number of talented parishioners who have given much time as well as their advice and expertise to help develop a strategic plan for our parish facilities. They love the parish as much as you do and have been extremely generous in this process. Also, as we continue to develop and form our new Pastoral Council, I see the Council and this strategic plan as a great dovetailing of form and function for our future.
Items I will be reflecting on are:
- Why we did not move forward on the original three phase plan of 2001.
- What we have done in the meantime in forming good financial controls.
- The embracing of San Felipe de Jesus as a mission to our parish of St. Edward the Confessor
- The formation of a Strategic Planning Committee.
- The results and recommendations of this planning committee.
- The current beginnings of a pre-design process to develop a design for the Pastoral Center.
At first glance, this seems like a most inopportune time to be doing any thinking of our future. It would seem that we should be doing everything we can just to hang on to what we have. But if we recognize that the parish has been practicing ongoing good stewardship then we are in a very good place to be planning for the future. While no one really knows when our national economy may get stronger, even the experts are wisely cautious in their predictions, we believe this is a very good time to be in planning stages. It takes a long process to develop a good plan, which is why we continue to develop a plan even in these tough economic times. I hope you’ll follow along with me in the next several weeks as I continue to update you.

Estimados Feligreses,
El verano se ha desvanecido en noches más frescas. Las clases de formación de la fe se han puesto en marcha a toda velocidad. Nuestras bancas los domingos se han llenado nuevamente, pues algunas personas toman vacaciones durante los meses de verano. Es en este momento que me gustaría compartir con ustedes el trabajo que se ha realizado el último año y medio sobre el futuro de nuestra parroquia y servicios de planificación. Creo que tengo buenas noticias para compartir con ustedes.
En las últimas semanas, me gustaría refrescar un poco y recordarles donde empezamos, lo que hemos hecho y donde esperamos ir. Yo agradezco mucho a un gran número de feligreses talentosos que han dado mucho de su tiempo, así como sus consejos y experiencia para ayudar a desarrollar un plan estratégico para nuestras instalaciones de la parroquia. A ellos les gusta mucho esta parroquia, tanto como a ustedes y han sido muy generosos en este proceso. También, a medida que continuamos desarrollando y formando a nuestro nuevo Consejo Pastoral, veo el Consejo y este plan como un gran encaje de forma y función para nuestro futuro.
Yo se que reflexionaran sobre los siguientes elementos:
- Por qué no continuamos con el plan original de tres fases en el 2001.
- Que hemos hecho mientras tanto, en la formación del control financiero.
- La adopción de San Felipe de Jesús a nuestra parroquia San Eduardo el Confesor
- La formación de un Comité de planificación estratégico.
- Los resultados y recomendaciones de este Comité.
- El comienzo de un proceso pre-diseño para el desarrollo del centro pastoral.
A primera vista, parece el momento más inoportuno para hacer cualquier cambio a nuestro futuro. Parece que tenemos que hacer todo lo posible para cuidar lo que ya tenemos. Pero si reconocemos que la parroquia ha estado practicando su buena administración, podemos decir que nos encontramos en un muy buen momento para estar planeando el futuro. Aunque nadie sabe realmente cuando nuestra economía nacional pueda recuperar su fuerza, incluso los expertos están siendo cautelosos en sus predicciones, creemos que este es un muy buen momento para iniciar nuestros planes. Se tomo un proceso muy largo para desarrollar este plan, y por eso es que queremos continuar con el, a pesar de estos tiempos económicos tan difíciles. Espero que sigan junto conmigo en las próximas semanas para seguir actualizándolos.
